GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90 %) and the state of Schleswig-Holstein (10 %) and is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR disposes over an annual budget of approx. 75 million Euro and has approx. 1000 employees.

For the project "ICONOX - Iron cycling in marine sediments and the nutrient and oxygen balance of the ocean" funded within the Emmy Noether Program of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft DFG) the research division "Marine Biogeochemistry" offers a

Postdoc position in biogeochemical modeling

starting on June 1st 2018 or earliest thereafter.

Job Description

Iron is an essential micronutrient and commonly regarded as the key-limiting factor for biological productivity in many ocean regions. Depending on environmental conditions (e.g., bottom water oxygen and sulfide concentrations), continental margin sediments can represent a source or a sink for bioavailable iron to the ocean. Within the ICONOX project, observational, experimental and numerical approaches are applied to constrain the role of sedimentary iron cycling in ocean biogeochemical dynamics, today and through geologic time.

The postdoctoral researcher will apply numerical models (sediment transport-reaction models, intermediate complexity ESMs) to evaluate the role of sedimentary iron release and burial in the global ocean's biogeochemical machinery. A particular focus will be the comparison of modern and ancient (e.g., Cretaceous) anoxic ocean regions, based on observational and proxy data. The research will be realized in close collaboration with other modelers, biogeochemists and paleoceanographers.

Qualification

The applicant should have a PhD degree, preferably in ocean biogeochemical modeling. Knowledge of Matlab, Mathematica and/or other programming languages is required. Excellent written and oral communications skills in English are essential. The candidate is expected to participate in research expeditions at sea.

The position is available for a funding period of 2 years with possible extension by a third year upon positive evaluation after 18 months. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position can be split.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply.

GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.

Applications, including a letter of motivation, CV, publication list and two letters of reference, should be sent not later than April 21st 2018 within one single pdf file to the following e-mail address using the subject line "Postdoc-ICONOX": bewerbung@geomar.de

As soon as the selection procedure has finished, all application papers will be destroyed according to data protection regulation.
