The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Kiel University, Germany, and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel jointly invite applications for the following position to be filled as soon as possible:

Junior Professorship (W1) in Meteorology

The junior professorship will initially be appointed for 4 years („Beamtenverhältnis auf Zeit”); depending on performance the position can be extended another two years. The position is based at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel and assigned to the Research Unit ‘Marine Meteorology’ within the Department ‘Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics’. The professorship holder should represent the field of Meteorology in research and teaching.

We are seeking a candidate with research experience and interest in the atmosphere-ocean system. This includes e.g. research in the area of climate variability and predictability as well as statistical climatology. The research profile can either focus on large-scale interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere or their basic physical processes. Both modelling and observational studies are welcome. Research in the field of paleo-climatology, as well as model initialization including data assimilation to analyze and predict climate fluctuations are also of interest.

Close collaboration within the Research Unit “Marine Meteorology” and the Research Division “Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics” is expected. Multidisciplinary teamwork with other research groups at Kiel University, e.g. Kiel Marine Science (KMS), and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is desired. International cooperation within the European Union, but also beyond is very welcome.

The successful candidate carries out excellent and internationally acknowledged research in the atmosphere-ocean system and is able to motivate students for this topic. The professor will teach within the B.Sc. program “Physik des Erdsystems” and the M.Sc. program “Climate Physics” with a teaching load of 4 semester hours per week. We expect the ability to teach in English and willingness to teach in German within 3 years.
