Universität Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate in the field of Marine Ecosystem Modeling for the project 'CliCCS – Climate, Climatic Change and Society' in accordance with Section 28 subsection 3 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG). The position commences on 01. April 2019 .
CliCCS is an ambitious research program at Universität Hamburg and strong partner institutions. Funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), it is part of Germany’s Excellence Strategy.
The program aims to understand climate changes, taking into account internal variability, ex-treme events, and unexpected side effects, addressing the natural and social spheres as well as their interactions. Thus CliCCS’ overarching research question is: Which climate futures are pos-sible and which are plausible? CliCCS will investigate how climate changes and how society changes with it, thereby feeding back on climate. It will identify those climate futures that are consistent with both climate and social dynamics (possible), and those we expect to unfold with appreciable probability (plausible).
The position is remunerated at the salary level TV-L 13 and calls for 65 % of standard hours per week*.
The fixed-term nature of this contract is based upon Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG). The term is fixed for a period of 3 years.

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates can also pur-sue independent research and further academic qualifications.
Active cooperation with climate scientists from different disciplines and institutes involved in CliCCS, specifically HZG (Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Centre for Materials and Coastal Research) and MPI (The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology) is expected. The candidate will ex-tend and apply existing coupled marine ecosystem models to study the effect of biologically-induced variability on coastal carbon fluxes. The candidate will design climate change scenarios, perform model simulations and analyze the results.
MSc or diploma in climate science or a related field with a strong interest in marine biological and biogeochemical processes. Good knowledge in oceanography, programming (e.g., FORTRAN), visualization tools and LINUX or UNIX is expected. The willingness to cooperate with colleagues from other disciplines and institutes is a prerequisite. The candidate must have either profound knowledge in English - native or TOEFL-score with a minimum of 25 in each of the four sections or equivalent (e.g. "DAAD-Sprachzeugnis") - or German (native or "Deutsches Spra-chdiplom", Stufe 1) with good knowledge in English.
