Postdoc Position - Ocean ModellingCode-No. 2012/KS 1 The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, near Hamburg, and in Teltow, near Berlin, conducts materials and coastal research. You can find more information at www.hzg.de. The Institute for Coastal Research in Geesthacht, near Hamburg, Germany, invites applications for a 3-year Postdoc Position (m/f) for the project MyWave: A pan-European concerted and integrated approach to operational wave modelling and forecasting - a complement to GMES MyOcean services, which is a Collaborative Project supported by the FP7-SPACE-2011-1/CP-FP. The department of Data Analysis and Data Assimilation at the Institute for Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht hosts a number of highly motivated and experienced researchers in the field of numerical modelling of regional coastal circulation, surface waves, sediment transport, data assimilation and remote sensing. The department is responsible for modelling pre-operational activities in the frame of COSYNA (Coastal Observation System for Northern and Arctic Seas) coordinated research activity in Germany aiming at developing long-term observational network for the southern North Sea and Arctic coastal waters, which will be linked to pre-operational models for scientific and management purposes. The department is partner in MyWave, which aims at increase the use of earth observations by improving data processing algorithms and data assimilation systems improve the physics in current wave models and provide a framework for coupled model systems (atmosphere/waves/ocean), establish a new standard for probabilistic wave forecasts based on ensemble methods derive standard protocols for validation products. Specific tasks of researcher will include also new source code design, source code updates and test bed, set-up of a web-based source code library. Furthermore, development and application of advanced data-assimilation techniques, allowing assimilation of radar wave heights in numerical models is the major expected outcome. The development will be carried out in close cooperation with the MyWave partners and in concert with COSYNA cooperation activities with German Hydrographic and Weather Services. The successful applicants will have a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science or related disciplines. A strong background in modelling and programming, in particular ocean and/or atmosphere models is desirable. Good skills in scientific programming (FORTRAN) as well as working with computers (Unix/Linux) are expected, as well as good knowledge of the English language (written and oral). Appointment will begin as soon as possible after February 1st, 2012 and will be for three years. We offer an appropriate salary related to TV-AVH as well as the usual public sector social benefits. The advancement of equality at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht goes without saying; in particular, we are striving to increase the percentage of women in the science sector. Severely disabled persons with equal qualifications will be considered preferentially within the framework of legal requirements. Please send your application indicating job offer code no. 2012/KS 1 to Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Max-Planck-Straße 1, 21502 Geesthacht, Germany, or to the e-mail-address: personal@hzg.de. Please include your CV, a statement of interest and the names and addresses of three references. Closing date for application is February 1st, 2012.
