The Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht is investigating the natural physical and biogeochemical dynamics of the coastal ocean and the impact of anthropogenic influences on the natural state.

We search for a qualified scientist to use hyperspectral optical data and ocean colour remote sensing data from satellites and airplanes to investigate water quality parameters in coastal and inland waters in the framework of the ENMAP project (www.enmap.org).

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) invites applications for a 3-year Postdoctoral Position (m/f) in the area of "Hyperspectral Remote Sensing of Inland and Coastal Waters" to prepare the German ENMAP mission.

Your tasks include:

• analysis of existing interdisciplinary remote sensing data sets from satellites and airplanes and comparison with in situ data
• further improvements of in the group existing algorithms which determine IOP's and water leaving reflectance from measured radiances of the remote sensing instruments
• use of optical and remote sensing instrumentation, from measurements of light absorption and scattering to hyperspectral cameras
• planning, participation, and evaluation of in situ and aerial observations
• work as an integrative part of a motivated multidisciplinary team within the institute and with external academic partners
• scientific publication and presentation

Job requirements:

• a PhD in oceanography or related field
• a strong background in bio-optical oceanography and remote sensing, or related fields
• extensive experience in observational oceanography and/or instrumentation; preferably in bio-optics or optical remote sensing
• strong academic publication record
• profound programming skills in at least one scientific programming language (e. g. FORTRAN, C, Matlab, Python)
• experience with hyperspectral optical data analysis, e. g. with ENVI, IDL
• very good knowledge of English (written and oral)
• high degree of creativity and flexibility; ability to work under pressure
• ability and willingness to participate in seagoing research

The following qualifications would be desirable:

• moderate knowledge of German
• knowledge of coastal and shelf sea processes
• good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team with scientists, engineers, and technicians

The Appointment will begin as soon as possible. We offer an appropriate salary related to the German public tariff (TV-AVH) plus the usual social benefits for the public employment sector.
