The Institute and the recruiting department

French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea, Ifremer, through its research work and expert advice, contributes to knowledge of the oceans and their resources, to monitoring of marine and coastal environments and to the sustainable development of marine activities. To these ends, Ifremer conceives and operates tools for observation, experimentation and monitoring, and manage the oceanographic databases.

Created in 1984, Ifremer is a French public institute of an industrial and commercial nature. It is supervised jointly by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Marine Affairs. Ifremer undertakes research missions, offers expert advice and acts as a funding agency.

The Marine Geoscience Research Unit of Ifremer is one of the founding units of the Institute. Since its creation, it has pursued its capacity to lead scientific, fundamental and finalized research in nearly all fields of marine geosciences. The Laboratory of "Sediment Dynamics and Geohazards" (LAD), is one of the 3 research laboratories of GM. The research led by LAD is supported by a multidisciplinary approach based on data acquisition, data processing and numerical modeling to move from a hypothetical active geological processes to a numerically verifiable conceptual model. The means deployed combine geophysical imaging methods, sedimentological analysis, geotechnical measurements and numerical modeling.

General areas of responsibility (principal missions)

The successful candidate will use in-situ and laboratory measurements as well as numerical models to contribute to improving our understanding of geohazards and failure mechanisms associated to gas hydrate accumulation, fluid circulation and earthquakes. He/she will contribute to improving and/or developing experimental and in-situ tools required for data acquisition and processing. He/she will contribute to developing quantitative seismic imaging techniques in order to spatially extrapolate local-site data to the field level. He/she will actively contribute to the development of new constitutive laws able to catch the complex hydro-mechanical response of marine sediments.

Principal activities

The principal duties of the successful candidate include:

  • Detailed geotechnical data analysis and interpretation.
  • Development of new data engineering methods.
  • Contribute to the development of new experimental and in-situ geotechnical instruments
  • Development of constitutive equations and their use in numerical simulations.

Collaborative work environment

Ifremer has developed an innovative and multidisciplinary approach to characterize shallow marine sediment, involving different techniques and contributors within the Institute. The position requires close collaboration with researchers in the field of geology, geochemistry and sedimentology from the two other research laboratories of GM as well as researchers from the technical research units at Ifremer (REM/RDT).

The successful candidate will deepen and develop national and international collaborations with research institutes as well as with industrial partners.

Required education and experience

  • PhD in soil mechanics and/or geotechnics with strong analytical, numerical and experimental skills
  • Experience in the marine field would be an asset.
  • Expertise Knowledge in geology and hydrogeology would be appreciated.
