The Department Marine Geology of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) offers a part-time (30 hrs/week)

PhD position

within the Leibniz-SAW network BaltRap at the earliest convenience. Remuneration is paid in accordance with the TV-L salary scale at level EG 13 monthly gross salary. The employment is temporary for 3 years.

The IOW is an independent institute of the Leibniz Association, engaged in system analysis of coastal and marginal seas, with special focus on the Baltic Sea. The scientists of the four departments (Physical Oceanography, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology) cooperate within the framework of a joint research program.

The national BaltRap network - "The Baltic Sea and its Southern Lowlands: Proxy-environment interactions in times of Rapid changes" - is a project funded in the frame of the Leibniz Competition 2017. BaltRap aims to comprehensively understand the impact of climate change in the southern Baltic Sea region during the Holocene by integrating high-resolution marine (sediments) and terrestrial (lake sediments and tree rings) proxy archives. The network is based on a very close interdisciplinary collaboration between scientists from the IOW, the Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), the University of Greifswald (EMAU), and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Potsdam Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum (GFZ). BaltRap presents an adequate platform to provide a better understanding of the variable sensitivities and response times of the coupled marine-terrestrial system to the combined effects of long term and rapid climate change and human impact.

We are looking for an excellent, enthusiastic researcher that enjoys working in a diverse scientific team bridging terrestrial/limnic and marine science in paleoenvironmental research. The PhD student will work on the topics of sedimentary proxy formation and application in both marine and limnic environments by applying inorganic/organic geochemical and sedimentological methods. The project will be jointly supervised by marine and terrestrial scientists. Candidates should hold very good/good MSc in geology, chemistry, or marine environmental sciences. Previous expertise in geochemistry including experience in ICP analytics and sedimentology would be of strong advantage. Good English language and team-work skills are desired. The candidates should be willing to participate in several week long ship cruises as well as possibly in research stays abroad.
