Postdoc Position Vacancy



The University of Hamburg jointly with the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the Institute for Coastal Research at the GKSS Research Centre is establishing a trans-disciplinary research focus on "Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction (CliSAP)". The goal is to analyze ongoing and past changes of the state of the climate system, in response to natural and human-driven perturbations, to determine predictable elements of the climate system over a broad range of space and time scales, and to determine uncertainties intrinsic to predictions of important climate system and environmental indices (see www.clisap.de).

The Cluster of Excellence (CliSAP) invites applicants to join our efforts to improve the initialization and, potentially, the prediction capabilities of the global coupled climate model ECHAM5/MPI-OM. For this work the university has an opening for a

Scientist/ Scientific Programmer (f/m)
with expertise in High-Performance Computing

post-doc research associate

- salary group 14 TV-L with a starting date in summer or fall this year.

The position calls for 39 hours per week. The fixed-term contract will end two years after the start date with possible renewal until October 31st, 2012; see also § 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz).

Responsibilities:

The applicant will work on the adaptation of the ECHAM5/MPI-OM model to incorporate observations in both the atmosphere and the ocean via a 3Dvar scheme. This task will be conducted with the help and in close cooperation to the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, where ECHAM5/MPI-OM has been developed. The applicant will then conduct the ensemble simulations with the model. There will also be the opportunity to join in the in-depth scientific analysis of the simulations.

Requirements:

We expect an academic degree in applied mathematics, physics, meteorology, or oceanography, plus a doctoral degree/PhD and the following skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in data assimilation and/or mathematical algorithm development.
  • Profound interest in understanding the coupled climate system.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in Fortran and/or C/C++.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Object-Oriented Analysis & Design.
  • Proficiency in working with, and developing applications for, the UNIX operating system environment.
  • Ability to conduct independent work.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
