The Research Center / Cluster of Excellence "The Ocean in the Earth System" (MARUM) at the University of Bremen, Germany, has the overarching scientific goal to achieve a better understanding of key processes in the marine environment. The research themes are: Ocean and Climate, Geosphere-Biosphere Interactions and Sediment Dynamics. MARUM is offering a
PhD position on the hydraulic effect of bedforms
in tidal environments
in the project SD1 Bridging scales: From small-scale morphological and sedimentological features to coastal and shelf systems.
The PhD project will be carried out in the research group "Coastal Dynamics" at Bremen University and will combine dedicated numerical modeling with high resolution field surveys on the geometry and dynamics of bedforms and the hydrodynamic environment in tidal channels and estuaries. Project tasks comprise the identification and parameterization of individual bedforms from high resolution bathymetric data. Turbulent flow and sediment transport patterns shall be observed and related to the morphological development of bed forms.
We are searching a highly motivated and skilled candidate with the following requirements:
- Completed academic degree, preferentially in Physics, Physical Oceanography, Earth Sciences, Coastal Engineering, Geosciences, or related fields
- A strong mathematical background and very good skills in scientific computing and visualization of data (MATLAB, GMT, ARC GIS) are required
- Experience with ship borne geoscientific field work (ADCP, ADV, LISST, MBES, SSS) and/or numerical modelling (e.g. Delft3d, SELFE, OpenFOAM, or else) of shallow water processes is a benefit
- Applicants should have excellent English language skills and enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team.
The position is available under the condition of job release and is limited to a term of 3 years and funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG). Salary and benefits are commensurate with the federal German employee scale TV-L 13 (66.6%). Applications should include a CV, a list of publications, a statement describing research interests, the applicant's research and technical background as they relate to the position, and contact information for three referees.
More information on research and technology at the MARUM is available at www.marum.de
As the University of Bremen intends to increase the proportion of female employees in science, women are particularly encouraged to apply. In case of equal personal aptitudes and qualification priority will be given to disabled persons. The University of Bremen expressly invites persons with migration background to apply.
