This challenging opportunity exists for a self - motivated individual to support and participate in the MESH Atlantic (Mapping Atlantic Area Seabed Habitats for Better Marine Management) project. The project is an international marine habitat mapping programme aiming to provide harmonised seabed habitat mapping over the coastal and shelf zones of the Atlantic Area in order to inform spatial planners and management.
The successful candidate will be involved in the collation of existing hydrographic, oceanographic, biological, and geological data as applicable to habitat mapping in the context of the Irish marine area. You will be primarily responsible for the integration of these data into an ArcGIS platform. It is intended that a GIS database be established, which will include, but not be limited to, side scan sonar mosaics, classified multibeam backscatter mosaics, bathymetry, groundtruthing digital point files in addition to interpreted geological polygons and oceanographic summary polygons.
To be successful you will possess a minimum of a degree in Earth Science, Marine Science, Hydrography, Environmental Science, Oceanography, Information Technology or a related discipline along with a minimum of 1 year of experience with large integrated datasets. A thorough knowledge of marine habitat mapping techniques and data interpretation is essential.
