The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPIM) is a multidisciplinary institute for climate and Earth system research located in Hamburg, Germany. It hosts one of the world wide leading groups on marine carbon cycle modelling that has developed the numerical model HAMOCC (Hamburg Oceanic Carbon Cycle) over the last decades. To strengthen this group we are looking for a

Scientist/Postdoc

(SAS2009-02)

who has indepth knowledge of the marine carbon cycle and its interactions with the climate system. A background in numerical modelling including model development with complex 3D ocean carbon cycle models is required, additional experience with Earth system models would be an asset. The applicant should be profoundly interested in current research activities of the group, such as investigating climate carbon cycle feedbacks, the marine nitrogen cycle, oxygen minimum zones, the future evolution of the biological pump, and interactions with other components of the Earth System, such as the atmosphere, land, and cryosphere. One initial working priority will be the implementation of HAMOCC into a new physical ocean model currently under development at MPIM, with the prospect of developing an adjoint model version of HAMOCC and assimilation of carbon cycle observations.

A Ph.D. in mathematics, oceanography, physics or related areas is required for this position. The applicant must have proven experience with numerical modelling and, ideally, also data assimilation techniques. Good programming skills (Fortran) are essential. The ability to conduct independent and collaborative research is mandatory. Good oral and written communication skills in English as demonstrated by publication record are required. For more information please contact Prof. Jochem Marotzke (jochem.marotzke@zmaw.de).

The position is available immediately. The appointment will initially be for two years. Afterwards, there will be the opportunity of applying for the succession of Ernst Maier Reimer as the leader of the ocean biogeochemistry group. Payment will be in accordance with German public service positions (TVoeD E13), including extensive social security plans. The conditions of employment, including upgrades and duration, follow the rules of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Sciences and those of the German civil service.

The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology seeks to increase the number of female scientists and encourages them to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.

Please submit your application together with detailed curriculum vitae, copies of the relevant certificates and the names, email addresses and telephone numbers of two references. The selection process will start on 26 February 2010 and will continue until the position is filled.
