A research position in coupled ice-ocean modeling and data assimilation is open at the Mohn-Sverdrup Center, Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, Bergen, Norway.

The position will be part of a team work to develop and validate the TOPAZ ice-ocean assimilation system for the high latitudes and Arctic Ocean. TOPAZ is a state-of-the-art system using the HYCOM ocean model, coupled with a sea ice model and using the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) for assimilation of both remote sensing and in-situ data. TOPAZ is the Arctic forecasting component of the European MyOcean project and exploited operationally at met.no.

The position is initially for a 2-years duration. We are seeking a candidate with a PhD degree or equivalent in applied mathematics or oceanography and with experience in numerical modelling and data assimilation.

It would be useful if the candidates could rate their knowledge in:

  • polar oceanography
  • numerical ocean modelling,
  • data assimilation,
  • applied mathematics,
  • parallel programming,
  • Fortran 90,

The vacancy is open for applications until the 10th November 2011. The position should start on 1st January 2012. The salary is according to experience.

The Nansen Center is an independent non-profit research foundation affiliated with the University of Bergen. The Nansen Center conducts basic and applied environmental and climate research with a focus on the Arctic environment using numerical modeling, remote sensing and data assimilation techniques.
