NIOZ, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, is the Dutch national oceanographic institute, uniquely located on the Wadden Sea coast. It employs over 250 staff: research scientists, lab assistants, technicians, ship crew and auxiliary staff. Our primary mission is to acquire and disseminate knowledge of seas and oceans. We wish to contribute to a sustainable future by increasing knowledge of our planet. We conduct research ourselves and we participate in numerous international projects, studying sites ranging from the Wadden Sea to the tropics and from the ocean near South-Africa to the Arctic Ocean. We also support marine research and education in the Netherlands and Europe. Our work focuses on pioneering and independent fundamental research into sea and ocean processes. Marine research is carried out by five science departments; Physical Oceanography, Biological Oceanography, Marine Ecology, Marine Organic Biogeochemistry, and Marine Geology. The research of the institute focuses on five multidisciplinary research themes: Open ocean processes, Sea floor dynamics, Wadden and shelf sea systems, Climate variability and the sea, and Biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. The department of Physical Oceanography (Department Head Dr. H. van Aken) studies ocean circulation, internal waves and long-term variability in the open ocean, over continental slopes and in the coastal zone, primarily by seagoing observational research but also by using numerical models and mathematical methods. One of the foci in the field of deep-sea research is the ocean circulation in the south-western Indian Ocean. For the research project Indian-Atlantic exchange in present and past climate INATEX, the department has an opportunity for a Postdoctoral researcher (3 yrs)Circulation in the South West Indian OceanVacancy number 2011-063Project description: This project aims at determination of the circulation through the Mozambique Channel and in the East Madagascar Current, the long-term temporal and spatial structure, and its hydrographical properties. Our observations near Madagascar already started in 2000 and are still ongoing. The project is jointly funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and NIOZ. INATEX is carried out in cooperation with the Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research of Utrecht University (IMAU). The postdoctoral researcher will take part in research cruises to recover and re-deploy the current meter arrays near Madagascar. He/she will be responsible for the data processing and for the scientific analysis. Requirements: We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a PhD in Physical Oceanography, Physics, Civil Engineering, or a comparable subject or a related physical subject. Experience with sea-going research is beneficial.
