  • Permanent, full-time

NIWA is one of New Zealand's leading providers of science solutions for management of the impacts and risks from natural hazards. The research and consulting services of NIWA are used by companies and local and regional government to assess a wide-range of natural perils.

We are seeking an accomplished and enthusiastic Scientist or Engineer to develop approaches to quantifying the impacts of hazards on built environments, communities, business, people and primary production. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the on-going development of natural hazard risk assessment and loss modelling tools. A significant emphasis will be on meeting end-user requirements for high quality information and advice on understanding and managing weather, climate and coastal-related natural hazard risks and assisting the development of new services both in New Zealand and the Pacific.

Candidates should be a Professional Engineer, Earth Scientist or equivalent with proven post-graduate experience in natural hazard risk assessment and loss modelling (preferably multi-hazard), and knowledge of natural hazard and risk reduction activities in New Zealand and the Pacific region.

They should also have experience with local authorities, emergency management and insurance sectors and be able to demonstrate their knowledge of how risk information can support decision-making in these sectors. A high level of computer literacy is required. The ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of audiences and your commitment to your clients will ensure success in this role. Candidates will also be innovative, self-motivated, have an eye for detail and be able to work within and lead multi-disciplinary project teams.

If this sounds like you, we want to hear from you. We provide an excellent work environment, offer competitive remuneration and benefits, free parking and an attractive waterfront location at Greta Point.
