NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. NIWA is New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science.
NIWA uses ROMS (Regional Ocean Modelling System) to describe and quantify processes in the open ocean and shelf-sea regions for a wide range of scientific research and commercial objectives. We are seeking an enthusiastic and skilled numerical ocean modeller to consolidate, develop, and expand our present expertise and range of services with ROMS. As part of an interdisciplinary cross-campus team, the modeller will use ROMS, as well as available observations, to characterise transport and variability in New Zealand's EEZ, coastal zones, the Southwest Pacific and Ross Sea domains. The modelling will potentially encompass dispersal (biota, oil, and sediment), biological productivity, biogeochemical transformation, and physical processes of critical importance to past, present and future states of these oceanic domains. This may require application of other relevant modelling systems. The modeller will also be involved in the development of operational applications for ROMS.
With a research degree in oceanography and/or numerical ocean modelling, candidates should have experience in modelling oceanic processes with ROMS and modern analytical methods for analysing ocean model output and datasets. Knowledge and experience with other modelling systems would be an advantage. They should also have strong analytical skills; an excellent background in computing (Windows, Unix, Fortran, and a scientific scripting language such as Matlab, IDL or Python).
The position requires a team player who is comfortable working in a multidisciplinary team environment. They should be self-motivated and results-orientated, showing initiative whilst being well-organised, conscientious and working productively with a range of staff across NIWA's sites. Candidates will also need good communication and presentation skills and a track-record in publishing research.
