Physical OceanographerMarine Physics and Ocean Climate group, National Oceanography Centre, Liverpool About the role: We are seeking a scientist to study the regional sea level projections with high-end RCP scenarios by 2100. This post is funded by EU project 'Responses to coastal climate change: Innovative strategies for high end scenarios-Adaptation and Mitigation" (RISES-AM). The aim of the project is to study implications of high-end scenarios (global average warming >2°C) for coastal areas associated with sea level rise and changes in extreme sea levels by 2100. This will allow a better quantification of impacts and vulnerabilities associated with sea level rise, showing that adaptation is possible at an affordable cost (compared to risk) and will serve to inform policy and decision makers, contributing to raise awareness on the multiple dimensions of possible adaptation pathways. As a researcher in the RISES-AM project, you will assemble regional sea level projections with high end RCP scenarios by 2100. As a part of your role you will use outputs from CMIP5 model runs to calculate steric component of sea level rise and examine contribution from melting of glaciers and ice sheets. Maps of regional sea level changes will result from regional patterns of mass changes of the ocean from glaciers and ice sheets and changes in thermal expansion of the ocean with RCP scenarios. You will write scientific papers and present findings at project workshops and international scientific conferences This post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is available initially for a fixed term of 2 years. Salary: £26,450 to £29,710 per annum About you: You will have strong computational and programming skills, have a PhD in Maths/Physics/ environmental science, and have experience in working with large data sets. Your first degree will be in physical sciences, engineering, mathematics or oceanography. A proven ability in scientific publication or experience in numerical modelling would be advantageous and good communications skills are essential. What we can offer you: In return for your talents, we offer a competitive remuneration package, including a UKSBS pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 10.5 Public/privilege days. Opportunities for further training and development are supported. The role will include periods of travel both within the UK and internationally. About us: The National Oceanography Centre is an international leader in sea level science and the development and application of coastal numerical models. We are part of the Natural Environment Research Council and a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean and is one of the top five institutions of its kind in the world. With sites in Liverpool and Southampton, it is the UK's leading centre for sea level science, coastal and deep ocean research and technology development. Working closely with its partners and associates, it provides capability to meet needs across the UK marine science community (http://noc.ac.uk/). General enquiries (about the role only), can be directed to Dr Svetlana Jevrejeva (sveta@noc.ac.uk) or Dr Judith Wolf (jaw@noc.ac.uk) How to apply: Applications are handled by the UKSBS; to apply please visit our website at http://topcareer.jobs/ quoting reference number IRC110273.
