Principal Investigator Ocean Technology and Engineering (OTEG)
National Oceanography Centre, Southampton
About the role:
You will use your creativity and innovative approach to technology to define and lead research within a collaborative multidisciplinary technology team consisting of research engineers, technologists and analytical scientists based in Southampton. You will augment existing research focused on sensor and ocean observing system development targeting marine geosciences, chemistry and biology working in collaboration with marine scientists and stakeholders with in-depth knowledge of applications and requirements. You will formulate, plan, lead, co-author and deliver successful funding bids and lead subsequent projects to create world class technology outputs including devices, technologies, patents and papers in high impact journals and accessible media. The commercialization of the research is strongly encouraged and supported.
We are open to proposals for research topics, but would welcome applicants planning projects in:
Responding to traditional research council, EU, innovate UK, industry and charity funds as well as new funding opportunities such as Official Development Assistance, Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and commercialization; you will develop detailed bids and project plans. These will engage personnel from a pool of >40 existing engineering and technical staff and will engage collaborators including marine scientists and companies. Where necessary you will assist in recruitment to fill skills gaps you define. Projects will be developed and delivered together with a wider team including project managers with whom you will collaborate. Coaching, mentoring, training and structured career development are available.

The starting salary for this position will be between £35,222 - £40,505 (Band 5) and £45,271 - £52,061 (Band 4) per annum.
Depending upon skills and experience, additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates between £1,500 and £5,000. Additional allowances will be evidenced against a strong record in grant capture and proven experience leading the development of new technology.
For applicants wishing to work part time, salary will be calculated on a pro rata basis and all part time employees will have full access to NERC benefits.
