About the role:
We seek a talented and enthusiastic scientist with substantial experience in modelling marine biogeochemistry, its role in climate and its impact on the society, to join the exciting Marine Systems Modelling Group at the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) in Southampton, UK. The successful candidate will have research experience, and ideally a publication record, in the area of ocean modelling, marine biogeochemistry and/or climate change.
You will work on the analysis of North Atlantic Biogeochemistry (BGC) and its role in climate in the Climate Linked Atlantic Sector Science (CLASS) Project, bringing together a wide range of modelling and observational efforts. You will work closely with the NEMO and MEDUSA ocean models and a range of future ocean and climate projections and collaborate widely across the UK and internationally. Collaborative publications in high impact scientific journals are a key expected outcome of this work.
This is a Fixed Term Appointment, initially available for four years. The NOC is a strategic research organisation that takes a long term view when recruiting. Whilst this is a Fixed Term Appointment, there may be potential to convert to an open ended appointment subject to operational requirements.
You will have experience in analysing ocean biogeochemical models and observations, ideally in a climate or wide earth systems context and be skilled in using analysis software. You will have a strong 1st degree in a numerate scientific or mathematics discipline and will have achieved PHD in a numerate environmental science discipline or hold equivalent experience. You will have excellent communication, oral, written and presentation skills.
The starting salary for this position will be between £29,181 and £33,558 per annum (Band 6). Depending upon skills and experience, additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates between £1,140 and £1,621.50. Additional allowances will be evidenced against scientific track record, including publications, experience in related projects and potentially grant capture, along with substantial research experience (postdoc) in the area of ocean modelling and BGC.
Ideally this position will be based in Southampton but we will consider applications from candidates who wish to be based at our Liverpool site.
