Post-doctoral Research Assistant in Earth System Modelling

During the last deglaciation, starting around 21,000 years ago and lasting for around 10,000 years, expanded ice sheets melted into the oceans in an irregular fashion. Associated with this melting was an isotopic signature, specifically the 18O ratio. Massive episodic meltwater input to key regions (e.g., the North Atlantic) may have interrupted the large-scale ocean circulation and such events are also expected to have impacted 18O ratios. Further alteration of 18O ratios arise through calcification and so interpretation of the sedimentary paleo-record of 18O in calcite at selected locations must account for several influences, both physical and biogeochemical.
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in Earth system modelling, to use the intermediate complexity GENIE Earth system model in support of the NERC-funded "Deglaciation QUEST" project, which has the aim of accurately simulating and understanding the transient behaviour of the Earth system during the last deglaciation. Multi-millennial model experiments will be undertaken to establish plausible range of ocean responses to melt water input. A forward module for representing 18O in marine carbonates will be developed and incorporated into the GENIE earth system modelling framework. The resulting package will be used in full deglaciation simulations with the GENIE model, to interpret selected 18O data.

You will have a PhD in physics, mathematics, oceanography/climatology (or related fields) and experience in numerical modelling.
