Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) in ice sheet modelling
About NORCE Climate
NORCE Climate conducts basic and applied research on the past, present and future climate system (including ice sheets), on anthropogenic climate change and its impact on societies, and on the feasibility of climate change mitigation options. NORCE Climate is one of the four partners of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), which is the largest climate research centre in the Scandinavian countries and among the leading centres in Europe.
Postdoctoral research assistant (PDRA) position
A 3-year postdoctoral research assistant (PDRA) position is available in the field of ice sheet modeling at NORCE Climate and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, with tentative starting date February 1st, 2020.
The position is funded through the EU H2020 project TiPACCs (Tipping Points in Antarctic Climate Components, www.tipaccs.eu). TiPACCs aims to better understand tipping points in the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic Ice Sheet. NORCE Climate coordinates this project, where the other partners are the University of Northumbria and BAS in the UK, PIK and AWI in Germany, and the University of Grenoble Alpes in France.
The research will focus on the impact of a warmer Southern Ocean on Antarctic Ice Sheet stability, in particular on ice sheet interactions during the Last Interglacial (about 125,000 years ago), when the Antarctic Ice Sheet was smaller than today, and the Southern Ocean was likely a few degrees warmer than today. The main task will be to assess if the Last Interglacial climate could have induced a rapid retreat of the Antarctic Ice Sheet.
This is an exciting, relevant and challenging area of science, and we are looking for a highly motivated person to join our sea level team at NORCE Climate.
Through TiPACCs, BCCR and NORCE, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with experts in the fields of polar (paleo)oceanography, ice sheet and climate modeling.
