Norwegian Polar Institute
Section for oceans and sea ice
Physical Oceanographer
The Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI) invites applications for a 100% permanent position as research scientist in physical oceanography to join our Oceans and Sea Ice section in the Research Department. The Oceans and Sea Ice section consists currently of 11 permanent staff, and 7 post-docs who investigate the physical and biogeochemical processes of the Polar Oceans and Nordic Seas. We seek a scientist eager to team up with other scientists at NPI to develop the institute's oceanographic research program further.
The Norwegian Polar Institute carries out scientific research, mapping and environmental monitoring in the Arctic and the Antarctic. The Institute advises Norwegian authorities in strategic and thematic matters relating to the polar regions, represents Norway internationally on various occasions and is Norway's competent environmental authority in Antarctica. Under the auspices of the Ministry of the Environment, the Institute has a staff of approximately 160 located in Tromsų, Svalbard (Spitsbergen) and Antarctica.
Work content
The successful applicant will conduct oceanographic research on the large and regional scale ocean circulation and ocean climate in the Polar oceans, with main focus on the Fram Strait and seas surrounding Svalbard.
The candidate will work with time-series data collected by NPI's mooring array in the Fram Strait and is expected to participate in NPIs regular cruises to the Fram Strait and to contribute to monitoring work carried out at the institute. This involves preparing high-impact publications using data collected by moored instruments and repeated CTD sections across the Fram Strait and on the East Greenland continental shelf. The successful candidate is also expected to develop and lead project based observational research in collaboration with other researchers in the section.
Qualifications
The candidate must hold a PhD in physical oceanography or a closely related field and have at least 2 years of post-doctoral experience in large scale physical oceanography, demonstrated by recent publications in highly-rated peer-reviewed scientific journals.
The candidate should have demonstrable expertise of processing and analysing time series of hydrographic and current measurements collected by moored instruments, including using programming tools such as Matlab, and experience from work in the Polar regions, especially the Arctic. Experience of using ship mounted and lowered ADCP measurements for physical oceanography and cross-disciplinary research is also s desired.
Experience of inverse modeling techniques and of analysing data collected along repeated hydrographic sections would be an advantage, as would experience of leading research cruises.
General
The workplace is Tromsų. The salary will commensurate with the qualifications of the successful candidate, according to the Norwegian State salary code 1109 or 1110, scale 57-68 (NOK 473 400 - 578 800). The position is open immediately.
