Naval Research Laboratory

Remote Sensing Division

Oceanographer NP-1360-111

We have a research position open for a full-time physical oceanographer. The position is located in the Remote Sensing Division at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. The Remote Sensing Division conducts a broad program of research in coastal and estuarine flows using infrared and hyperspectral remote sensing, in-situ measurements, and numerical and analytical modeling.

Recent and/or ongoing research projects have included 1. Calculation of ocean surface velocity fields with the velocity projection technique and two or more surface tracers. 2. Use of visible and near-infrared image sequences to discern and model river processes. 3. Direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow on a rotating earth, with an emphasis on surface effects.

Required Expertise: The successful candidate must have a degree in oceanography or an equivalent discipline. Knowledge of at least one standard programming language such as FORTRAN (preferred), C++, or IDL is essential.

Duties will consist of data analysis, programming of analytical models, assistance in preparing journal manuscripts, and may involve assisting in conducting experiments. In the broadest sense, these experiments can be either in the laboratory or field. Experience in image analysis with specialized analysis software (e.g., ENVI) is very desirable, but not essential.

The level is at an NP-III, which is equivalent to GS 11-13, with an annual starting salary of $57671, which includes the Washington area cost of living.

Interested parties should attach a resume in an email to Dr. Richard Mied (mied@nrl.navy.mil; tel. (202) 767-8237).
