Technical Officer, The School of Natural Sciences -
Earth and Ocean Sciences (Oceanography)
The School of Natural Sciences at NUI Galway is student-centered and research-intensive School, and hosts several worldwide-renowned research laboratories and clusters (see http://www.nuigalway.ie/natural_sciences/).
Applications are invited for a full time technical officer role in the School of Natural Sciences.
The successful candidate should be an honours graduate of a marine-related discpline*. Candidates with a post-graduate qualification at the level of MSc or PhD are highly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate must be prepared to spend up to 3 weeks at a time at sea or on land-based fieldwork.
The successful candidate for this position must have experience of working at sea. Candidates should hold a Certificate of Proficiency in Personal Survival Techniques on board ship (PST) and will be required to pass an ENG-11 seafarer medical examination. Applicants should have proven mechanical and electrical workshop skills, and boat-handling skills. Ideally candidates will have significant experience of maintaining and deploying a range of oceanographic and land/marine geophysical equipment. Experience of processing and analysis of oceanographic/geophysical data would be an advantage. The successful applicant will be expected to co-ordinate and participate in oceanographic training and research surveys and to engage in the delivery and development of undergraduate practical teaching in the School, involving daily interaction with students, researchers and academic staff. The successful applicant will be expected to manage oceanographic workshop facilities, to maintain oceanographic and geophysical equipment, and to train students and researchers in research protocols and equipment handling. The successful candidate will be expected to continuously upgrade and develop oceanographic and geophysical technologies for research and teaching and to undergo training as required.
*The recommendations of the 'Report of the Expert Group on University Technician Grades' will apply to the selection process.

Salary:
€39,699 p.a. to €47,722 p.a.
€35,729 p.a. to €42,950 p.a.(applicable to new entrants effective from January, 2011)
(This appointment will be made on the Technical Officer scale in line with current Government pay policy)
