Academic Coordinator/Unit 18 Lecturer: Masters of Advanced Studies - Marine Biodiversity and Conservation

Since 2003, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), the multi-disciplinary Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation, and other UCSD departments have developed an interdisciplinary Masters of Advanced Studies training program in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation designed to place experts into careers in the marine conservation field.

We seek a creative leader to fill the working title of Executive Director of MAS-MBC at SIO with a professional in the field of marine biodiversity and conservation. Additionally, the incumbent will serve as a Unit 18 Lecturer when fulfilling teaching responsibilities.

The Executive Director assumes lead responsibility for innovative development of the training program, coordination with professional organizations in the field, recruitment and mentorship of all MAS-MBC students, and instructional lead of the flagship interdisciplinary, multi-instructor, summer course.

The Executive Director is in charge of the intellectual content, ongoing development, and management of the MAS-MBC program, as well as development and evaluation of courses offered by faculty and researchers at SIO, other UCSD departments, and experts in external organizations relevant to MBC.

The successful candidate should have the professional skills, experience, and/or willingness to engage in activities that will enhance diversity and equity efforts at SIO, UC San Diego and in the field of marine conservation at a national level.

The successful candidate will participate in teaching as an instructor or co-instructor of selected MAS-MBC courses including ones in the candidate's area of specialization.

The Executive Director works closely with the MAS-MBC Administrator, the MAS-MBC Program Chair, the MAS-MBC Steering Committee, staff in the SIO Education Department, SIO Alumni Office, and faculty and researchers across UCSD.

In addition, the Executive Director is expected to develop and maintain an extensive, professional network with external individuals, organizations, and businesses related to Marine Biodiversity and Conservation and act as a bridge between external organizations and the university.

The Executive Director takes the lead in student recruitment, advising, networking, and job counseling as well as collaboration with UCSD alumni organizations to track past graduates from the program.

The Executive Director reports to the SIO Department Chair while working closely with the MAS-MBC Program Chair.

The payroll title will be proposed at the Academic Coordinator I, II, or III level, commensurate with education, experience and University of California pay scales, and is subject to review and reappointment every two or three years (specific to level).

Qualifications and skills include:

  • Must have a graduate degree (Master's or higher) in marine biology, marine conservation, marine management, ocean policy and law, or related field. PhD or JD degrees are preferred, however, exceptional individuals with a Master's and equivalent training and/or experience may be considered.
  • Related policy and non-academic organization experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including evidence of excellence in teaching.
  • Ability to work effectively in a higher education environment, both academically and administratively.
  • Experience in educational and/or public outreach activities.
  • Proven ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain and analyze data and compose reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in person and in writing with diverse campus communities.
  • Proven administrative background to effectively manage staffing and resource requirements in a higher education environment.
