Research Fellow - Geochemistry
Location: National Oceanography Centre Southampton
Applications are invited from researchers to work as Research Fellow in the Geochemistry Group of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton. Our group comprises of more than 30 researchers and postgraduate students applying cutting edge geochemical analysis and modelling to scientific questions of major societal, economic and environmental importance. We have a world-class range of analytical equipment and associated clean laboratories and our instruments and techniques are applied to applications in a diverse range of fields from the geological to the medical.
This post is funded through a NERC proposal to the University of Southampton entitled "SWEET: Super-Warm Early Eocene Temperatures and climate: understanding the response of the Earth to high CO2 through integrated modelling and data". This is a NERC large grant involving a number of researchers at Southampton, University of Bristol, Open University, Northumbria University, Imperial College, and Cardiff University and is closely aligned with the international DEEPMIP project (http://www.deepmip.org/).
The applicant's role in this multi-disciplinary project will be to: (i) better understand boron isotope vital effects through experiments on modern foraminifera at the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (www.bios.edu); (ii) generate high-resolution records of CO2during the early Eocene using the boron isotope pH proxy.
The applicant should have a PhD (or equivalent) in either chemistry, geochemistry or isotope geochemistry and should have some experience of sample preparation, clean lab methodologies, elemental purification using column chromatography, and analysis using (multi-collector) inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Some experience with boron isotope geochemistry would also be beneficial. This position will also involve field work to Bermuda.
This post is a fixed-term appointment for two and a half years. For further information about the Geochemistry group and related work at Southampton follow these links:
