Senior Bathymetric Science Officer

Location: Taunton, Somerset
Salary: £31,589 pa
Hours: Fulltime, Part-time, Flexible Working
Contract: Permanent

Based within our award-winning offices in Taunton, Somerset, the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has an excellent opportunity for a hydrographic professional to join our Terrestrial Science Team.

There are several Senior Bathymetric Science Officer posts in the Terrestrial Team, which sits within the wider Scientific Analysis Group. The team in made up of hydrographic specialists with different levels of experience from a range of Defence and Commercial backgrounds, including team members who have "grown" as specialists whilst at the UKHO.

The team has 3 key areas of responsibility:

  • Verification of all Bathymetric Data (including multibeam and Lidar) received by the UKHO for use in a wide range of UKHO products and services.
  • Planning and delivery or oversight of bathymetric surveys as part of overseas marine capability building programmes.
  • Supporting External Engagement activity by providing consultancy and training to external organisations.

Senior Bathymetric Science Officers primarily focus on the first task day to day but will also have the opportunity to undertake the other activities described, dependent on business need.

What we are looking for:

This is a highly analytical role that requires the postholder to be able to examine and verify large quantities of hydrographic data, of varying density and quality. Practical experience of bathymetry collection is key to successfully undertaking this role, along with competency in the use of a range of bathy processing and archiving software and tools.

The role requires the post holder to have focus and attention to detail, but also adaptability and a willingness to undertake and potentially lead surveying in the field, particularly overseas, as and when the opportunity arises. Above all, the post holder will be a team player: this is a specialist team and Senior Bathymetric Science Officers are expected to support each other in achieving their output targets and in coaching and mentoring less experience staff within, and outside of the team; sharing their skills and knowledge of Bathy Data Processing and the wider aspects of Bathymetry as a science.

And in return?

We will actively empower you to develop yourself and provide flexible working practices for a healthy work/life balance. You will also benefit from a brand-new award-winning office, with use of our on-site gym, free parking and subsidised canteen.
