Postdoctoral Investigator - Physical Oceanography

Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join a team of modelers and observationalists with extensive expertise in coupled air-sea-wave interactions and parameterizations. The projects aim to improve the representation of ocean and wave impacts in the ocean mixed layer, atmospheric boundary layer, and air-sea fluxes for the North Atlantic Ocean, using the SCOAR coupled ocean-atmosphere-wave model (https://hseo.whoi.edu/scoar-model). The project will also test a hierarchical representation of the ocean and wave-mediated processes in NASA's Unified WRF (https://nuwrf.gsfc.nasa.gov)

The initial appointment will be for 1 year with a possible second-year continuation contingent on progress and funding. Qualified applicants must submit the application forms online here. The documents should include a cover letter, CV, and contact information (only) of 3 references. Review of applications will begin April 1, 2022, and continue until the position is filled. Interested applicants should contact Dr. Hyodae Seo (hseo@whoi.edu).

Essential Functions

  • Validate the WaveWatch-3 (WW3) wave model and improve wave-wind and wave-ocean coupling physics
  • Analyze in situ and remotely-sensed observations of coupled boundary layer variables and directly measured air-sea fluxes,
  • Refine wave-based parameterizations of near-surface vertical mixing in the ocean model (ROMS) and COARE bulk flux algorithm in the atmospheric model (WRF),
  • Undertake comprehensive model validation efforts under various extratropical cyclones and stable boundary layer conditions

Education & Experience

  • Recent or near Ph.D. degree in physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, or other relevant disciplines
  • Strong numerical modeling and quantitative skills with prior experience with WW3, ROMS, WRF, and/or other regional coupled modeling systems (including COAWST)
  • Expertise in analyzing in situ and remotely-sensed observations for air-sea fluxes, surface waves, and near-surface turbulent mixing

Special Requirements

WHOI is a federal contractor required to comply with Executive Order 14042. As such, WHOI has enacted a Mandated COVID19 vaccination policy effective December 8, 2021 where you must register your vaccination status in order to begin your employment. The registration process entails confidentially submitting a vaccination card and/or your vaccination status or requesting to engage in the interactive exemption process for either a medical or religious reason.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to work alone or in a group, in a lab or in a field setting.

WHOI is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer/Disabled/Veterans/M/F. We encourage Veterans and those with Disabilities to apply. Applications are reviewed confidentially. Applicants that require accommodation in the job application process are encouraged to contact us at (508) 289-2253 or email eeo@whoi.edu for assistance.

If you are interested in applying for the position, please submit your application with supporting documents to our online application, found here.
