The Lithium Resources team is responsible for overseeing our existing resources and developing new ones to enable Albemarle’s strategy to be a leader from mine to market and ensure a more sustainable future. Members of this team work across a variety of geology and engineering functions including exploration, grade control, mine planning, metallurgy/process, environmental/permitting, economics, and community engagement.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Lead Geologist – Kings Mountain to join our Lithium Resources team at the Kings Mountain Mine in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, USA.

This is a permanent position to be based in Kings Mountain or surrounding area.

In this role, you will be responsible for managing and developing a geology team (contractors or full-time hire), providing quality and timely geological inputs to multiple mine planning initiatives, and support grade control/reconciliation processes. Well-suited candidates should be capable of strategic and critical thinking, collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team, and be proactive in implementing initiatives relevant to enhancing geology and mine planning. Additionally, in this position you will:

Validate and contribute to all resource and reserve reporting for the mine in collaboration with the Albemarle Lithium Resources team and ensure SEC compliancy for the annual technical report following expected timelines.

  • Develop and oversee the strategic near-mine exploration, resource definition drilling, and grade control drilling plan within the mine area to support short to long range planning.
  • Review and validate geological data inputs supporting geological modeling or other disciplines in the mining value chain, including but not limited to;
    • Mine engineering/planning
    • Process/metallurgy
    • Environmental/Permitting
    • Hydrology/Hydrogeology
    • Geotechnical
    • Economics
    • Community Engagement
  • Report and support mine reconciliations to enhance optimization of mining/processing and ensure consistent product specifications.
  • Research, test, and make recommendations on new products, processes, and technologies to improve production, reduce costs, or enhance safety at the mine.

About You


  • At minimum; Bachelor’s degree in geology;
  • Graduate degree in geology or mining engineering preferred;


  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in mining for metals/non-metals, with at least 5 of this in an operational mining environment.
  • Familiarity with multiple styles and purposes of drilling, and prior experience in contract and logistical management of drilling.

Requisite Skills/Characteristics:

  • Strong commitment to team safety and health in an active mining operation. Ability to guide and refine inputs to HSE guidelines to fit with overall corporate policies.
  • Extensive mine geology experience with focus on dilution management, grade control processes, and integration of geology to short and long range planning.
  • Understanding of mineral resource and reserve definition processes as well as SEC reporting requirements.
  • Understanding of open pit mining methods and infrastructure design.
  • Knowledge of principles of basic rock mechanics, hydrogeology, and civil engineering common to active mining operations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products to include Powerpoint, Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.
  • Proficiency with Maptek Vulcan, Datamine, Leapfrog Geo, or other general mining packages.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills for professionals involved in mining as well as manufacturing or customer-facing roles.
  • A proven problem solver with leadership, mentoring, team building and motivation skills.

Essential Functions

How you will spend the majority of your time:

  • Travel of up to 10% in the region, with potential for some international travel.
  • Coordinate reviews of geology and data at Kings Mountain for internal stakeholders across multiple disciplines
  • Develop, coordinate, and lead near-mine and grade control drilling programs to support long and short range mine planning.
  • Coordinate communications on resource/reserve growth and depletion to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide geological input to and review of mine planning and process discussions.
  • Ensure the effective collection, documentation, and interpretation of all data, including QAQC protocols.
  • Engage local community stakeholders in town hall meetings, mine tours, press, and other external facing communications, with a focus on demonstrating Albemarle core values and consistency with the highest standards of conduct.
  • Contribution to the preparation and presentation of quarterly reviews of mine development/production
  • Preparation of material as required for inclusion in company presentations
  • Participate in annual budget project reviews
