The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BUNDESANSTALT
FÜR GEOWISSENSCHAFTEN UND ROHSTOFFE, BGR) is the central geoscientific
authority providing advice to the German Federal Government in all
geo-relevant questions.
The Federal Institute of Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) is designated
as a leading geoscience centre in Germany and, through research
projects and technical cooperation agreements, has a global scope of activities.
A key project of the Mineral Resource/Economic Geology Unit at the
BGR is the certification of mineral trading chains in conflict-affected and
high risk areas in central Africa.
In this context, BGR is looking for a
Geological Scientist/Economic Geologist
or Mining Engineer
in a fixed term position from 1 July 2013 until 31 December 2015.
The BGR advises and supports the Mining Authorities in the Democratic Republic
of Congo (DR Congo) in the implementation of a national certification
system for mineral resources (cassiterite, “coltan”, wolframite, and gold).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Technical work and support within the framework of the project “Implementation of a National Certification System for Mineral Resources in the DR Congo” in collaboration with the BGR project team and counterparts
- Advising and supporting the Technical Departments of the Congolese Ministry of Mining implementing a certification system for gold, tin, tantalum, and tungsten ores in Eastern Congo
- Advising and supporting mining enterprises and artisanal miners enhancing mining practices and management, undertaking field work in the corresponding mining areas
- Organization and realization of education and training
- Preparing and presenting high-profile reports on the project results
Requirement profile:
- M.Sc. (or equivalent) in Mining Engineering, Economic Geology, Earth Sciences, or another mining-related discipline
- Knowledge in technical, environmental and economic aspects of the mining sector
- Experience in the mining sector in developing countries, preferably in artisanal mining
- Excellent command of German, English, and French
- Fit for working underground and in the tropics
- Proficiency in the realisation of international standards on best mining practice desirable
- Strong skills in working collaboratively in a team and in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment
This post is classified in the E 13 grade of the Collective Agreement for
the Public Services (TVöD). After a preparation period in Hanover and Bad
Honnef the post holder shall be deployed permanently in Bukavu (Eastern
Congo), which will be remunerated with an extra pay for working abroad.
