Research Projects Officer - Explosives Technology

The Position

In November 2016, CRCMining (Cooperative Research Centre for Mining) and CSIRO Mineral Resources division joined forces to create Mining3. CRCMining, in its entirety, transitioned into Mining3 while CSIRO provides leadership, Resources, facilities and staff to the new entity on an on going basis. Mining3 facilitates a high level of industry engagement and works across both entities to provide leading research capabilities to its members.

In this role you will contribute technical expertise to identify, develop and support novel explosives technologies in Mining3 Research Programs. Specifically in the fundamental areas of explosives chemistry; physics of detonation, energetic materials, initiation systems; delivery systems; and rock blasting applied in the mining industry. You will also initiate and deliver training in energetic materials developed by Mining3 for the Australian mining industry.

In this role you will:

  • Contribute technical expertise to deliver innovative projects in the Hard Rock and Surface Mining Program area.
  • Provide vision and technical input to Mining3 projects in the fundamental area of Explosives and energetic materials.
  • Communicate with mining industry personnel regarding current and potential project development.
  • Contribute towards funding applications to support the research.
  • Work with colleagues and postgraduates in the development of joint research projects.
  • Project leader for appropriate Mining3 Projects.
  • Contribute to research publications and reports.
  • Present the results of the research at conferences and seminars.
  • Travel to sites to participate in Mining3 research projects.

Location: Pullenvale, QLD
Salary: $78K - $88K plus up to 15.4% super

Tenure: Specified term of 3 years

To be successful you will need:

  • Experience with laboratory scale testing of energetic materials.
  • Experience in designing and conducting laboratory experiments.
  • Recent experience in field trials, ideally with energetic materials.
  • Ability to design training modules.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in fundamental areas of explosives chemistry; detonics and energetic materials.

Other requirements:

  • A current Australian drivers licence; willingness and ability to travel to remote mining locations; and ability to meet medical requirements for working in mines.
