Senior Geophysicist

Position Description:

The role offers you many challenges in a highly active, multi-disciplinary team where you will have significant opportunities to use all your skills and undertake a variety of project assignments depending on your experiences.

You will join the UK asset team where you will use your technical capabilities and experience to help us reach our business objectives, thereby contributing to the company’s growing reputation as a quality operator and an effective partner in our large licence holdings.

You will be responsible for geophysics support for both operated and non-operated developments within the UK business unit, and will assist the UK Exploration team with appraisal / pre-development activities. You will principally carry out the work yourself but will also be asked to QC work carried out within this discipline on behalf of the UK whether sourced internally or via external consultancies.

As an experienced Geophysicist you will from part of the Company’s Geophysics network, you can get support from the network, and will be expected to provide support to the network – in the form of technical advice and peer assistance.

You may be asked to act as a corporate resource for Geophysics expertise and carry out Peer Reviews on Company Energy assets outside the UK.

The role will include:

  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis of existing seismic volumes (both 2D and principally 3D)

  • Recommendation of acquisition parameters for new seismic programmes, and the monitoring of such programmes.

  • Recommendation of re-processing of existing seismic volumes to: mitigate signal-to-noise, multiple suppression, enhance frequency content etc. Monitoring of such work.

  • Net pay estimation from seismic via AVO or other amplitude based techniques

  • Seismic modelling and basic rock physics

  • Structural interpretations

  • Depth conversion

  • Input to static models in PETREL

  • Sensitivity and uncertainty analysis

  • Performing risk analysis that will influence the robustness of the project

  • Planning new wells as part of an integrated team

The team will grow as the extensive exploration and development portfolio matures, and it is anticipated that the successful candidate will find their responsibilities and exposure growing accordingly. As such this represents a significant career development opportunity. Team is located in UK, however work commitments may entail business travel in NW Europe.

Qualifications/Experience:

The following experience, skills and experience are required:

  • A postgraduate degree in Geoscience

  • At least 7 years experience

  • Prior West of Shetlands experience and/or experience in a turbidite environment is preferable

  • Interpretation experience with 2D and particularly 3D seismic

  • Some exposure to the challenges of 4D seismic application would be ideal

  • Quantitative techniques, their use and limitations (AVO etc.) Note: Net Pay estimation from seismic via amplitude techniques is common place within the portfolio.

  • Well / Seismic ties and depth conversion techniques

  • Volume and risk evaluation

  • Seismic acquisition planning

  • Strong working knowledge of seismic processing and re-processing techniques

  • Well planning

  • A good knowledge of rock physics.

  • Strong interpretational skills (experience of PETREL seismic would be a genuine advantage)
