Project Advisor

Position Description:

The primary responsibility of the Project Advisor is to provide team leadership, project management and business analysis capability in support of E&P technical business units on systems-related projects, leading to the development and growth of the business through the effective use of technology.

Roles and Responsibilities include:

  • Working as part of a wider team (regional and global), provide business analysis/facilitation support to all value chain groups and SE Asia operational locations as required, within the functional responsibility of the Global Engineering Systems team. Specifically:
    • Conduct strategic reviews of existing processes and technologies.
    • Gather and analyze detailed business requirements. Convert requirements into an architecture and design for the solution being created.
    • Coordinate the development, testing and implementation of robust solutions.
    • Define, plan and execute projects to address the underlying requirements.
    • Provide process and technology guidance and leadership in line with Exploration & Production Technology principles, EPT- IT standards and industry best practices.
  • Apply formal project management methodologies and reporting practices in line with EPT- IT project guidelines and principles, to ensure timely and effective delivery of technical projects:
    • Direct the activities of the project team to achieve project objectives.
    • Evaluate, select and manage the activities of any external service providers.
    • Effectively influence and negotiate with stakeholders.
    • Provide effective project communications.
    • Effectively manage project budget, schedule and resource plans.
  • Manage a small regional department of staff and consultants, ensuring the activities of direct reports are properly coordinated and assessed, appropriate staff development plans are in place and being actioned, and higher level functional and business information of relevance is actively shared and cascaded within the team.
  • Develop, build and maintain relationships with key business customers and other stakeholders to build trust and co-operation, to ensure continued alignment with their business objectives and strategies, and to help achieve partner status.
  • Liaise closely with other functional EPT- IT groups, the EPT organization and GI&O as appropriate, to ensure Enterprise Architecture principles, technology standards and process best practices are observed, promoted and upheld, and to help build the reputation of the EPT- IT organization as a value-added service to the E&P business.
  • Utilize internal and external resources (e.g. industry groups such as Gartner, Society of Petroleum Engineers, etc) to raise awareness of industry research and trends.
  • Keep the Senior Manager, International EPT- IT, EPT- IT Management and other stakeholders informed of progress on all activities on a regular basis.
  • Help develop and manage a regional EPT-IT budget of around US$10 million per annum.
  • Represent company interests and requirements to vendors, partners and National Oil Companies for the purpose of improving processes & workflows, data exchange, relationships and technology exchanges and synergies.
  • Evaluate (in association with business representatives and Global Engineering Systems) and implement new technology solutions within the Production and Engineering disciplines.
  • Manage and adhere to a global application portfolio including optimal licensing in order to ensure cost efficiency.

Qualifications/Experience:

The following skills, qualifications and experience are required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering preferred or relevant discipline, ideally with a subsequent post-graduate or professional qualification.
  • Proven experience in a related technical/managerial role in the upstream oil and gas industry. Preferably with another operator in SE Asia.
  • At least 10 years relevant industry experience
  • Formal accreditation in a leading project management methodology (Prince2, PMP, etc).
  • Extensive and relevant project management experience with a demonstrable record of successful delivery.
  • Proven business analysis, facilitation and/or process change management experience.
  • Strong leadership skills, preferably with experience of leading a small department or project team and of managing/developing staff as well as mentoring/coaching a team in SE Asia across different cultures and geographies.
  • Excellent communication (written & verbal English) and relationship-building skills. Ability to work with all levels of the organization from senior E&P Management to individual technical contributors. High level of interpersonal skills in managing team members and customer relationships.
  • Exceptional listening skills and ability to decipher and diagnose customer requirements
  • Detailed knowledge of the upstream oil and gas industry, ideally in the areas of production operations, drilling, facilities engineering, production engineering, reservoir engineering and petroleum economics.
  • Knowledge and experience of current IT, communications and collaboration technologies and their deployment within the upstream oil & gas industry, and a good understanding of the principal GI&O technologies required in support of oilfield operations (WAN, LAN, server, desktop, etc).
  • Demonstrable understanding of leading industry software applications and workflows within these functional areas of responsibility. Knowledge of the Schlumberger application suite, Production Data Management Systems (PDMS) and Field Data Collection Systems.
  • Delivery-focus with an emphasis on task ownership and completion. Self-motivated with an enthusiastic, methodical and diligent approach.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and be flexible, potentially working many concurrent tasks through obstacles to a successful conclusion.
  • A flexibility and willingness to travel in support of project activity where required.
  • Problem solving – Innovative thinking to develop new technical approaches to solve specific problems.
  • Objective thinking to ensure solutions continue to evolve with changing business needs and climate.
