An oil and gas exploration and development company actively expanding its regional and international porfolio.
The Role
This position is for a leading, internationally experienced technical geophysicist to lead the geophysics function for the company and take responsibility for the Geophysical Projects team, providing specialist support for exploration and production assets.
The geophysicist should have a thorough grounding in the interpretation of seismic data, incorporating geological and well data interpretation, fault surface mapping. In addition, experience in creating and using complex trace and surface attributes, AVO and elastic and acoustic impedance attributes and volumes to ensure that relevant geophysical aspects of the exploration, appraisal, development and management of hydrocarbon resources are thoroughly performed within the technical guidelines of the company. Whilst the role demands technical leadership, it is expected that this will also be a hands-on workstation position in which the geophysicist will actively participate and guide projects.
Technical work will include but not be limited to:
- 2D and 3D seismic interpretation for NV, Exploration and Development projects as required
- Generation of well ties and detailed synthetic seismograms including wavelet analysis and fluid substitution studies to understand seismic responses
- Management of acquisition and processing projects for the company
- Rock physics studies as required, including seismic attribute studies, seismic modelling, inversions and AVO
- Design and implementation of VSP surveys as appropriate 2D and 3D velocity model building
- Written and verbal reporting of technical studies and presentations.
Leadership, business & technical management and networking responsibilities will include:
- Leadership of the Geophysics Function in the company (Chief Geophysicist)
- Champion functional excellence within the geophysics community in the company, including refinement of best practice workflows
- Champion the 3D interpretation working environment in the company
- Develop and mentor the geophysical community in the Exploration and Reservoir Development teams
- Champion access to relevant leading-edge technologies and manage/supervise the geophysical technology programme and geophysical Joint Industry Projects
- Develop the geophysics community for the company and build the required resource base
- Develop strong working relationships across the geophysical community in the company
- Manage projects to time and budget
- Lead workflow and review processes and contribute to well proposals/post well evaluations/interpretation projects as required
- Presentation at internal and external meetings as required and instructed
- Plan geophysics community project budgets
- Internal meetings and networking in the company across NV, Exploration and Reservoir Development
- Meetings and networking with JV partners, Government of India and other regulatory bodies
- Be aware of Finance and Accounts key representatives to ensure payment of invoices in a timely manner
- Be aware of new geophysical technical developments to build working relationships with technology developers in this discipline
- Lead the company's subsurface technology programme definition and technology transfer in geophysics
- Liaison with drilling and environment teams as necessary.
The Person
The following skills, qualifications and experience are required:
- MSc or PhD in Geophysics with a subsequent strong focus and expertise in Geophysics
- 20+ years of experience primarily in seismic interpretation with experience of rock physics, along with broad technical experience in hydrocarbon exploration and production
- Good understanding and experience of all seismic activities including seismic acquisition, processing and related geophysical operations
- Significant international experience with an operating oil company is essential, including working in a variety of basins in both exploration and production projects
- Some experience of working or managing a discipline function
- Strong current geophysical workstation skills, including working in a 3D visualisation environment
- Some experience in GIS and database management would be an advantage
- Team player with open and flexible approach
- Good communicator and presenter
- Commercially aware with entrepreneurial attitude
- Understanding of project execution and cost implications
- Willingness to travel extensively, both within India and elsewhere such as SE Asia and the Middle East.
