Highly successful oil and gas exploration and production company that offers a very supportive work environment and exposure to advanced technologies.

The Role

Our client is seeking a Geologist experienced in stratigraphy and in particular Lithostratigrahy to join their Stratigraphy team and undertake specialist studies for both exploration and production assets.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Support subsurface and Geosolutions teams for advice on lithostratigraphy issues (pre-, syn- and -post-drill)
  • Provide and document ditch cutting, sidewall core and core chip descriptions and lithostratigraphic determinations
  • Review and provide assessment/quality assurance of mud loggers' ditch cutting descriptions and lithostratigraphic determinations
  • Provide support to drilling operations at cost and time critical moments that require an assessment of the hole's lithostratigraphy for example: casing points, coring program, TD determination, frontier wells and so forth
  • Provide lithostratigraphic support at the well site (if required) for critical decision making for example: HT/HP wells/casing points/coring points
  • Undertake thin section description for lithostratigraphic determination
  • Promote and champion new well site and lab-based technologies and techniques for advancement in rock description and characterization
  • Compile and maintain records of outcrop stratigraphy for comparison with subsurface stratigraphy
  • Compile and maintain a routine workflow to undertake and catalogue lithology descriptions of sidewall core material
  • Formalise and give in-house training courses on lithological description, determination and lithostratigraphy of the region
  • Solve lithostratigraphic related problems and recommend improvement opportunities and techniques
  • Provide expert input in stratigraphic (correlation) de-risking issues as part of the exploration well-planning process
  • Contribute to skills development of all staff, coaching associated staff, promoting on the job training
  • Meet HSE responsibilities as cascaded through the exploration department.

The Person

The following skills, experience and qualifications are required:

  • Minimum of a Degree qualification in a Geoscience discipline. M.Sc. or Ph.D. in stratigraphy and/or sedimentology preferred
  • Minimum 8 years experience in well site operations and integrating and interpreting relevant subsurface stratigraphy, drilling and logging data
  • Experience as a Senior Well Site Geologist for exploration and frontier wells
  • Extensive practical skills and expertise in description of ditch cuttings with microscopy and associated tests
  • Knowledge of regional geology and stratigraphy particularly the Arabian Peninsula geology in general will be an advantage
  • Good understanding of exploration and development business issues and drivers
  • Innovative, able to manage demands and expectations from various stakeholders and accept diverse opinions
  • Should be comfortable working in an environment in which there is not always enough data and no clear right or wrong answers
  • Sound communication and project management skills
  • High motivated
  • Effective team player and an active participant in team discussions.
