A leading global independent energy company, engaged in the exploration and production of crude oil and natural gas. Position Summary:

  • Houston based position as Senior Operations Geologist for the company operated in West Africa. Current production rates for both projects in excess of 100 MBOPD. One rig is currently operated with an expectation of two rigs in 2009 and an additional floating rig in 2010 for operations. The well program in 2009 comprises 15 new wells and 3 re-completions.

  • Candidate must have significant experience in well planning and design, wellsite operations, 3rd party contractors coordination and strong communication skills.

Roles and Responsibilities:

This is a key role in the Subsurface team ensuring subsurface well objectives are efficiently obtained on each well project through the detailed well design process managed by the drilling team and the offshore execution in West Africa.

The position reports to the Subsurface Lead Geologist.

This Senior position will be assisted by an additional operations geologist in the subsurface team.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of subsurface well planning in close collaboration with the subsurface technical roles: Well proposals, Data acquisition programs, Post well reviews, Final well reporting, generation of AFE's and supporting documentation required for internal and external approvals.

  • Assist the drilling team in the well design process: Cost estimating, Risk assessments, trajectory and casing depths optimization, Data acquisition program

  • Focal point for subsurface during well execution phase: Attend morning calls, manage and coordinate deviation from plan that impact subsurface objectives, on call duty for operations, assist offshore and "in-country" well site operations geologists, assist drilling team managing 3rd party contractors and associated logistics (mudlogging, LWD, wireline, coring), ensure data integrity and management.

Qualifications/ Experience:

The following skills, qualifications and experience are required:

  • Minimum of a B.S. in Geoscience subject

  • 10 years of relevant experience with drilling operations, wireline logging, LWD logging, mud logging.

  • Must have outstanding organizational ability, must be self-motivated and a long range scheduler and planner.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Must have excellent people skills, as the operations geologist is a pivotal role between a number of departments: Subsurface, drilling, finance, supply chain, EG operations, 3rd party contractors.

  • Must be motivated by excitement of drilling wells and of ever changing challenges which this presents.

  • Must be willing to be on call outside of normal business hours.
