Senior Geophysicist – Exploration Evaluation

Position Description:

This position will be responsible for the identification and evaluation of exploration opportunities, as well as assisting in evaluation of the exploration potential of Business Development projects. The successful candidate will be exposed to a wide range of Countries, Basins and structural settings/plays.

The successful candidate will be capable of independent action and judgment using his/her skills and knowledge to support and make critical and timely business decisions. The candidate will be able to work well in a multi-discipline team. The person should be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal, collaboration and communication / influencing skills. An ability to communicate technical project results clearly and concisely is required. Mentoring of junior employees will be expected. The position will require direct external interaction with a number of parties, ranging from National Oil Companies to third party vendors. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a history and ability to contribute in a team environment. Ensure consistent integrated (Decision Based) evaluation process in all subsurface aspects-scaled to project requirements. The job requires periodic international travel. The candidate must be action oriented and consistently deliver results and meet stated deadlines.

There is potential in the New Ventures organization to candidates who aspire for supervisory / team lead roles. In this regard leadership, portfolio analysis, planning and economics skill sets/experience will be considered of benefit.

Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluation of exploration opportunities ranging from Country to Basins, play to prospect level

  • Interpret a variety of G&G data including 2D or 3D seismic, potential field and well data. Provide responsive, expert geophysical interpretations and to fully understand, characterize and quantify structural and subsurface uncertainties. Familiarity with depth conversion techniques, tying wells to seismic and well synthetic generation. Seismic interpretation (horizon and fault mapping, seismic facies mapping, seismic attribute analysis. Familiarity with seismic reprocessing, acquisition techniques and methods. Experience with seismic attribute analysis, AVO/AVA analysis, seismic inversion, seismic modeling, and velocity model construction

  • Assist in the development of appropriate entry strategies for selected opportunities

  • Identify and recommend potential new ventures exploration opportunities.

  • Participate in, or lead, on-site technical evaluations in US and foreign locations

  • Identify and develop opportunities in priority focus areas using business contacts and competitive business information sources.

  • Liaison and coordinate with other teams, in-house specialists, contractors and consultants. Engage and monitor work by specialists and specialist contractors as and when needed

  • Clearly communicate and document project results and recommendations.

  • Develop, maintain and leverage Industry/Professional relationships.

  • Provide input to Peer Assists and Peer Reviews for other projects as needed

  • Support and participate in Health Environment Safety (HES) initiatives and ensure compliance with the agreed HES procedures and practices of all activities in areas of discipline responsibility   

Qualifications/Experience:

The following skills, qualifications and experience are required:

  • Degree: BS and MS Required; Major Discipline: Geology, Geophysics

  • Years Experience Required: Minimum of ten (10) years Exploration experience, ideally 3+ in New Ventures/International Exploration.

  • A track record of Basin & Play analysis, prospect generation (significant seismic interpretation and mapping expertise), volumetrics/risking required.

  • Ability to quickly integrate data and judge quality opportunities, with a strong business overprint.

  • Computer Proficiencies: Landmark Interpretation suite, 3D Visualization (VoxelGeo or Geoprobe) & Risk analysis required. UNIX-LINUX, ArcGIS, MS office suite, Mapping software preferred.
