Principal Hydrologist

Location: Cardiff/ Bristol

My client is one of the world’s leading environmental Consultancies with a real presence worldwide and renowned for its excellence. Within the company they have a first class Water Group which is part of the overall Geoenvironmental department. Due to continued success they are now looking to appoint a new Principal Hydrologist to their team across Cardiff and Bristol.

The work undertaken by the team includes water management, water supply, water resource assessment and water treatment, mainly focussed towards the global mining sector.

At present there is a good mix of both Hydrologists and Hydrogeologists, working on a variety of projects in Africa, Russia and CIS Countries with the occasional projects outside of this remit.

With this position I am looking to hear from Senior/ Principal Professionals who are recognised industry experts within Hydrology and who are keen to develop their own professional interests where you will have the support to do this with the framework of the team.

As a Principal Hydrologist the primary role is to provide competent consulting services to support projects and clients. The role involves working as part of the multi-disciplinary team providing input on project development studies, acting as project manager on technical studies. You will also be responsible for representing the consultancy professionally to clients at all levels with the client’s management and operations.

The essential requirements are as follows;

A solid degree or equivalent in a hydrology related science or engineering subject with preferably a higher degree and/or significant hydrological experience gained internationally.

Previous experience of undertaking hydrological studies and contributing to project development work, ideally for international (non-UK) projects and for a variety of commodities.

  • Design and installation of hydrological monitoring networks: meteorological stations; stream depth monitors; weirs; flumes; water quality monitoring rainfall runoff modeling: data analysis, model design, calibration and validation.

  • Water resource modeling and estimation

  • Input to Environmental Impact Assessments

  • Input to Feasibility Studies

  • Preliminary sizing and design of surface water management features such as channels, culverts and impoundments

  • Long-term rainfall analysis (extreme event analysis).

  • Watershed and catchment analysis and mapping.

  • Modeling evaporation, infiltration, through-flow, runoff and erosion.

  • Surface water hydrograph analysis and interpretation, flow data regionalisation.

  • Estimation of groundwater recharge and ability to collaborate with hydrogeologsits

  • Flood estimation: peak flow estimation, flood line mapping.

  • Catchment and site-scale water balance estimates.

  • Previous hydrometry experience: surface water flow measurement (springs, streams, rivers); water quality sampling and measurement.

  • Confident user of standard surface water modeling approaches, including related statistical and visualisation packages, particularly ARCGIS.

  • Experienced user of ARCGIS, ARCHydro and/or related GIS models.

  • Proven track record of bringing projects in on time, within budget and to the client’s satisfaction.

  • Competent report and proposal writing skills requiring strong English language skills (verbal and written).

  • Strong communication and team building skills.

  • Strong leadership and business development skills.

  • Effective organisation and time management skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
