Underwater Acoustics Engineer
Location: Hampshire (with worldwide travel)
£20,000 to £25,000
Our client is an international group of companies specialising in the design and manufacture of acoustic instrumentation, the conduct of large scale and complex acoustic recording projects and numerical acoustic modelling of underwater sound. The rapid growth of the new European branch has created an excellent opportunity for a motivated and committed individual. They are looking for an Ocean Acoustic Engineer to work as part of the UK team based in Hampshire
The post will be broad-based with multiple-responsibilities not exclusively related to underwater acoustics and candidates will need to be both versatile and enthusiastic to engage in several supporting business areas such as logistics, health and safety and project management.
The principle field role will involve preparation, deployment and retrieval of a variety of underwater acoustic instrumentation packages in coastal and offshore environments. There will be a requirement for a considerable amount of world travel to carry out fieldwork in addition to technical training. In due course, the role is also likely to be expanded to include the challenging task of numerical modelling for assessment of environmental noise impacts in which our client offers a cutting-edge capability.
Candidates will require a strong academic background in applied oceanography, engineering, maths or acoustics as well as an ability to work effectively at sea and deal with the physical aspects of handling moorings and scientific equipment. A track record in the use of technical software will be important as the role will require the successful candidate to apply existing software skills and learn how to apply new bespoke software tools.
The work will carry a significant amount of responsibility and will require a considerable degree of innovation, original thought and the ability to work methodically, unsupervised. Candidates will need to hold a full driving licence and, on joining, complete a UKOOA medical and formal OHSE training in order to carry out work offshore.
