Senior Ecologist


Southampton, UK

Salary : £38K+


Our client is an international consultancy business that offers exciting opportunities for individuals wanting to make a difference. Their ecological team has substantially grown offering professional and highly competitive services to a range of clients.

To support the growing demand for ecological services they now have an exciting role for a Senior Ecologist to join their existing team in Southampton.

The successful applicant will be -

  • Responsible for providing technical competency across the ecological discipline.
  • Undertaking field assessments as identified by the team leader.
  • Writing and checking of reports to clients.
  • Communications to clients and statutory bodies.

Experience & Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons) in Ecology, Environmental Biology or equivalent, a post-graduate qualification an advantage, but not essential.
  • Must have at least 5 years experience in ecological consultancy.
  • Experience in undertaking extended Phase 1 ecological assessments, ecological impact assessments and environmental impact assessments is essential.
  • Excellent experience and understanding of EU and UK legislation is essential.
  • Protected species experience is essential; a bats licence would be an advantage.
  • Knowledge and experience of managing ecological project in the infrastructure industry would be a distinct advantage.
  • Experience in project management would be an advantage.
  • Member of the Institute of Ecology & Environmental Management (IEEM).

  • Good report writing and communication skills are essential.
  • Excellent team working and communication skills.
  • Good commercial awareness.
  • Strong abilities to work independently
  • Good ability to take the initiative, make rational decisions and work to tight deadlines to meet client needs.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Willingness to travel across the UK, with extended periods of time working away from home. Clean driving licence.

The company offers highly competitive salaries depending on experience and responsibilities, plus a company-performance related pay bonus and pension.

We need someone who has run their own projects, can mentor staff, and has good Ecological Impact Assessment experience. They also need to be a full member of IEEM and preferably (though not essentially) need to be a Chartered Environmentalist, if they are not they will need to want to work towards it and have the experience to make up for not having it.

A lot of candidates are protected species specialists and while this of interest, what is paramount is someone who can write reports - hence the main ask is for someone with Ecological Impact Assessment experience.
