The Sustainability Group of this leading architectural, design and engineering practice advises clients on how to achieve improved whole-life cost performance with reduced environmental impact. The consultancy addresses social, economic and environmental sustainability issues at all stages of developments - from Masterplan design through to building commissioning and operation.

Their Sustainability Group provides a wide range of services across building design and regeneration to both the internal and external client. Services include BREEAM, EcoHomes and Code for Sustainable Homes assessments, thermal modelling, concept and detailed design, performance targets, whole life costing, Environmental Impact Assessments, Sustainability and Energy Statements for Planning and the provision of specialist innovative solutions.

Qualifications and previous experience

You will have a qualification in environmental design and/or sustainability related course, or an engineering/architectural background with an interest in pursuing a Masters qualification in environmental design and/or sustainability. You will have two to three years’ relevant experience working in the field of Sustainability. You will also have previous experience of environmental design within a commercial organisation.

Typical aspects of experience include: -

• Sustainability Strategies for Masterplan designs (including environmental and social regeneration)
• Sustainability Strategies for concept designs of buildings
• Environmental and Sustainability Assessments, such as BREEAM, Sustainability Appraisals and Environmental Impact Assessments
• Identification and management of sustainability issues on projects
• Environmental issues - efficient use of natural resources, environmental quality and enhancement, pollution control etc
• Social issues on projects - quality of life, health and wellbeing, education, inclusion, safety and security, community facilities etc
• Economic issues - employment, economic and commercial viability, transport and communications infrastructure, whole life costing etc.
• Working knowledge of environmental and sustainability legislation and its applicability to a range of projects
• Renewable energy calculations
• Report writing
• Presentations

Responsibilities & Duties

Responsibilities are wide ranging but will include: -

• Develop the company's sustainable design offering to ensure that it remains at the forefront of the industry, maintaining in depth knowledge of current legislation as well as helping to shape and develop future assessment methods.
• Proactively seek opportunities to implement sustainable design solutions both within the internal and external market.
• Work in close collaboration with clients and other professions, both when confirming the brief and on a day-to-day basis, to the completion of the project.
• Have the ability to work under pressure whilst monitoring goals and communicating with a team.
• Meet project deadlines and budgets.
• Have an awareness of the total design and delivery process, recognising the need for integrated information delivery and high quality aspirations for the out turn product.

Technical

• Work closely with urban designers, planners, architects and engineers particularly at the early project stages, continually looking to new technologies, ensuring that the company adds to its reputation for providing broader sustainable design solutions.
• Keep up to date with innovations in environmental and sustainable technologies, issues and regulations, in areas such as biodiversity and ecology, waste management, materials, pollution, environmental quality.
• Have the skill to convert conceptual thinking into developed design and construction documentation within the context of financial and programme parameters.

Candidate Profile

The successful applicant will have an innate enthusiasm for driving developments towards sustainability, through the practical implementation of the principles of sustainability along with a thorough understanding of environmental, social and economic issues at local, national and global levels. You will be keen to promote the built environment recognising the influence of sustainability and modern technology and have a good understanding of the planning, design and construction industries and be able to work closely with urban designers, planners, architects and engineers. Good with numbers and graphics, you will be able to work well within a multi-disciplinary team environment.

You will want to make changes both within the company and within the industry, will earn the confidence of both external and internal customers and will build relationships internally and externally. You will have the personality and charisma to encourage people to work with and for you. You will be flexible and will maintain a keen interest in developments in the industry, be enthusiastic about the design and construction process and possess a positive outlook on life. You will have excellent communication and negotiation skills and have the ability to articulate and pitch ideas effectively and be looking for a fresh challenge.
