Geoscience Software Engineers / R&D Software Engineers


Midland Valley provides structural geology software and consulting services to the upstream oil, gas and mineral industries worldwide. We are actively expanding the company and are looking for a Geoscience Software Engineers to help develop our next generation Move products for both the desktop and future tablet markets.

This is an exciting opportunity for a multi-disciplined individual to join our dynamic team. You will undertake a geoscience software engineering role, and play a part in the development of our core Move technology. You will also be expected to interact closely with geology specialists in our company as you help to develop and improve algorithms and workflows, user interface, and visualisation aspects of the product.

Whether you are a recent graduate, or a seasoned professional with a commercial track record we would equally consider you for this role - as long as you possess good numerical and problem solving skills. The applicant must possess a minimum of a good first degree in one of Computing Science, GIS, Geology, or Geophysics.

Experience in developing earth science related products and libraries would be advantageous, but is not essential. We are looking for creative people who want to lead and innovate and share in our success. The applicant must demonstrate technical competency in some of the following:

  • windows or linux or mac development skills ; ios or android development skills
  • c or c++ programming design; oo design and uml; stl and boost.
  • matlab or python scripting of mathematical or geometrical problems.
  • gui development using qt or qt quick ;
  • 3d graphics toolkits ( opengl, openscenegraph, webgl).
  • multithreading experience; gpu programming using cuda or opencl.

We are always looking for talented people to help drive our R&D and next generation geoscience application development. The following skills are always highly valued:

  • Geometrical modelling, algorithms, and analysis in 2D or 3D
  • Strain Modelling and Fault Analysis ; Kinematic modelling techniques in 2D and 3D
  • Geomechanical modelling and Fracture modelling approaches; BEM
  • Sediment and fluid flow modelling (Turbidity and Channel flows)
  • Tetra volume and Geocellular volume construction methods
