Exploration Geophysics Team Leader - Denmark

Exploration Geophysics Team Leader

The Exploration & New Business Department in Copenhagen is looking for an exploration geophysicist with 10+ years of experience in the oil industry.

The Department

The Exploration Department is responsible for identification of exploration drilling opportunities and for the management and operational implementation of exploration work, including the drilling of exploratory wells.

The technical work includes:

Regional geological and geophysical studies, which are carried out to identify basins and areas of particular interest to support bidding in exploration bid rounds and to support farm-in and acquisition initiatives.

Identification and mapping of leads and prospects for drilling opportunities. This work involves quantification of prospect volumetrics and evaluation of economic viability, forming the basis for well proposals.

The operational execution of data acquisition and exploration and appraisal drilling, which takes place through my clients Oil's local offices.

The Exploration and New Business Department in Copenhagen currently has a staff of approximately 90 geologists, geophysicists, engineers and technical support staff.

The Position

You will be working as an explorationist in the West Africa Group. The focus of the work will be on identifying and maturing prospectivity in operated blocks in the Kwanza Basin, ready for exploration drilling in 2010. My client has a substantial position in the basin, and is currently evaluating the viability of large pre-salt prospects similar to the gigantic finds offshore Brazil. Some 4200 sq km of new 3D seismic is at the team's disposal, currently at various stages in advanced time and depth imaging.

You will be responsible for the technical quality of the work performed in the Kwanza Basin, for project planning and execution of the exploration processes, and will function as the key contact in technical partner meetings. Mentoring of younger staff is also part of the functional responsibility. The Team Lead position requires extensive interaction with other technical groups within Exploration and other departments, in particular Geophysics and Data Management.

Qualifications

10+ years of oil industry experience with a strong background in exploration geophysics is required, preferably with an operator.

Extensive experience with 2D and 3D seismic interpretation is expected, particularly across several basin types and tectonic regimes. The candidate is expected to have an understanding of qualitative and quantitative seismic attribute analysis (AVO, rock physics, DHI analysis), depth conversion experience, and an ability to liaise closely with more specialist geophysical support where necessary. Basic knowledge of PSTM and PSDM processing products will also be advantageous, particularly within the context of salt imaging.

Angolan geology provides a tremendous opportunity to work with world-class data in a hugely challenging structural regime characterized by significant salt tectonic activity and variable clastic and carbonate reservoirs. An interest in and understanding of salt tectonics and structural restoration is therefore also highly relevant.

Familiarity with probabilistic resource assessment and risking will be an advantage, as the Team Lead Geophysicist will be responsible for the volumetric inputs into the resource determination process. The standard exploration interpretation software is the Landmark suite, particularly Seisworks/Powerview, and the 3d visualization package Geoprobe. Petrel is also widely used and integrated throughout the department.
