Rock Deformation Research Ltd

Software Geologist - Leeds

RDR Ltd (www.rdrgroup.co.uk) is a geological consultancy based in Leeds, UK. We specialise in structural geology and its impact on hydrocarbon reservoirs, and in structural interpretations for the mining industry. Our work covers consultancy, research, training and software development. Currently RDR has around 30 full-time staff with a wide range of skills including structural geology, geophysics, and software development.

An exciting and growing part of our business is in the development of specialist software tools for commercial sale in the hydrocarbon industry. The Petrel E&P platform (produced by Schlumberger; www.slb.com) is the petroleum industry-standard 3D geological modelling package. RDR is the only external company to have produced a module for Petrel and this is now being used by our clients around the world. Our new plug-in, Studio Advisor has been created in collaboration with Schlumberger and provides all Petrel users with documents embedded within Petrel, including training and practice workflows across all Petrel domains.

The candidate will have a PhD or 5 years industry experience as a minimum, and will work primarily in producing workflows and training programmes for the global Petrel audience with an emphasis on property modelling (facies and petrophysical modelling). A good knowledge of stratigraphic concepts and hydrocarbon geology is essential and a working knowledge of Petrel or other modelling platforms is beneficial. Fieldwork or experience with subsurface data is also preferable.

Primary roles and responsibilities will include:

  • Embedding best practice content workflows with an emphasis on property modeling directly into Studio Advisor in line with our software development cycle.
  • Providing input for enhancing the usability of the Studio Advisor software. This requires effective communication with software developers on a daily basis and also senior people within Schlumberger. Testing of our new software developments will also be required on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Providing support in the marketing of the geological software with Oil Company clients.

Secondary responsibilities will include:

  • Providing support and participating with the running of training courses, including the use of Petrel and associated modules and combined software-outcrop combined training courses.
  • Providing assistance and guidance to software testers on a daily basis.

Travel

  • Travelling internationally and locally on marketing trips to visit clients as well as be given the opportunity to attend various conferences. You would be required to give demonstration presentations to clients and liaise with Schlumberger and external contacts to assist in growing the business.

The role offers a good salary and benefits package which includes a company bonus, 26 days holiday and pension.

To join this exciting and dynamic team interested applicants are requested to send a letter of application, the names and addresses of two referees (1 personal and 1 professional /academic) and CV to:
