Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer (U21208)



Shell Canada is currently seeking a Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer (U21208) for their Calgary location.

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with the Geotechnical Design Team Lead,shares responsibility for design of tailings dams,pit slopes and waste dumps in compliance with provincial regulations, national or international design guidelines,and locally established geotechnical practice.
  • Review technical work of consultants.
  • Authors,signs and stamps geotechnical design reports.
  • APEGGA member authorized to seal and issue construction drawings for use.
  • Delivers fit for purpose geotechnical designs for dams and large earth structures.
  • Provide skill level technical direction to the geotechnical design group; from concept through design basis and detailed design.
  • Checks geotechnical principles and analyses are appropriately understood and applied in design by junior staff.
  • Checks analyses,calculations data interpretation and technical writing of junior staff.
  • Performs more complicated analyses.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Geotechnical, Mining, Civil or Geological Engineering
  • Professional Geotechnical Engineer registered or eligible for registration in Alberta.
  • Previous experience in open pit mining operations
  • 10+ years geotechnical experience
  • Individual must be comfortable working in a multitask environment
  • Must be able to work well with operations personnel in order to achieve objectives
  • Must be prepared to occasionally work in harsh environmental conditions
  • Skilled in dyke and dump construction activities, including planning, constructing, monitoring, and reporting
  • Skilled in oil sands tailings planning activities, including analyzing and classifying materials, creating storage plans, monitoring placement of materials, and reconciling planned to actual tailing storage
  • Skilled in oil sands tailing engineering, including collecting and analyzing data from deposits, predicting and modeling slurry/deposit behaviour, selecting investigation and test methods, assessing tailings behaviour
  • Skilled at geotechnical engineering, including assessing and analyzing foundation conditions and construction materials, stability analyses, seepage analyses, stress-strain deformation analysis, planning geotechnical structures, monitoring and interpreting data from lab and field investigations
  • Skilled at performing ground water engineering, including selecting and specifying testing methods and procedures, interpreting and analyzing results, and creating aquifer models and reports
  • Skilled in managing geotechnical drilling and instrumentation planning, including selecting appropriate drilling methods, selecting monitoring instrumentation, interpreting instrumentation data
  • Knowledge of Oil Sands Geology related to mining and geotechnical operations
  • Knowledge of Oil Sands Mineral Processing principles
  • Knowledge of Oil Sands Mining practices
