Master of Petroleum Geoscience

REF: 496023

UWA's postgraduate degree in Petroleum Geoscience is a two-year Masters program designed to give you a broad training in geoscience applied to the exploration and production of hydrocarbon resources. The course covers the fundamentals of petroleum systems as well as the most advanced concepts and methods used in the petroleum industry. You will be given the skills to explore sedimentary basins for oil and gas and characterize reservoirs in the subsurface. Emphasis is placed on the development of practical skills, research skills including communication, the ability to work in team, and the integration of multiple datasets to solve Geoscience problems. This two-year MSc program includes both coursework and an applied research project and is ideal if you wish to pursue a career in the oil and gas industry. It is also a pathway to a PhD degree in Geoscience.

Why choose UWA?

The course is taught by leading researchers in the field with access to the world-class research facilities of the School of Earth Sciences, UWA's Centre for Energy Geoscience and Centre for Microscopy, Characterisation and Microanalysis, including industry-grade computer workstation, interpretation software, 3D imaging facilities and outstanding microscopy. You may also undertake field-based coursework where you will learn about basin evolution and petroleum systems, and develop practical skills in sequence stratigraphy and reservoir sedimentology. The course benefits from the direct contribution of the industry and makes the most of Perth's unique location at the heart of the oil and gas industry in Australasia. Guest lectures from industry scientists, access to company datasets, and workshops on clastic and carbonate reservoirs at the Core Library of the Department of Mines and Petroleum of WA contribute to making this course unique in the southern hemisphere.
