Job Overview: An established Company providing a suite of software solutions and consultancy services to the upstream oil and gas industry for the last decade seeks a Senior Geophysicist for their specialized geophysical consultancy group. You will manage and provide technical guidance to a small team and also undertake pre- and post-stack seismic inversion projects. Applicants are invited with a background in pre-and post-stack inversion, strong project management skills and the ability to lead and mentor a team of more junior geoscientists. Experienced in Depth Conversion would also be an advantage. The role offers an excellent opportunity to further your technical and managerial skills working for a recognised leading technical Company in this field. The train from South West London is circa 1 hour and 1.5 hours from central London to Salisbury.

The Company is small but rapidly growing, with a strong technical ethos and has developed a number of industry leading technologies in pre-and post-stack inversion, stochastic seismic inversion and depth conversion. They have developed unique extended inversion techniques that are gaining substantial reputation amongst their clients and in the industry in general.

Their geophysical consultancy group undertake specialised projects in geophysics and geostatistics on behalf of both small-medium and global major oil company clients. These projects involve analysis of data from and description of the sub-surface geology of hydrocarbon reservoirs, Recognised as leading authorities in the fields of stochastic modelling, inversion and geostatistics, the Company undertakes in-house bespoke training courses for major oil companies globally, and writes and presents technical papers at conferences and for oil industry journals.

As hydrocarbon exploration, production and development costs continue to soar in the global marketplace, the need to reduce risk and uncertainty is paramount. On behalf of their clients, this consultancy group has several proven methods of handling risk and uncertainty, both as proprietary techniques and as part of PETREL modelling workflows. Their projects are 30% North Sea and 70% international based, so you will be exposed to various data sets and challenges.

The Company, based close to Salisbury Train Station has a flat organizational structure, friendly environment, and an excellent reputation in the upstream exploration and production industry for innovative software technologies and consultancy services.

Responsibilities: Reporting to Company's Chief Technical Expert this role encompasses many responsibilities including:

  • Become competent in the Company's seismic inversion, geostatistics and depth conversion techniques. Full training provided.
  • Become competent in the Company's work practices and processes.
  • Build relationships of trust with your clients understanding project requirements, timeframes, constraints and challenges.
  • Lead and manage a small team of geoscientists in the delivery of projects.
  • Provide technical guidance, support and mentoring to your team. Be proactive in developing their skills, project management capability and promote technically sound practices and workflows within your team.
  • Manage the project delivery; ensuring projects are completed to clients' requirements, high technical standards and in a timely and professional manner.
  • Undertake pre- and post-stack seismic inversion projects including Quantitative Interpretation (QI) of seismic data.
  • As required, present technical results to clients.
  • Strive to improve service delivery at all stages - build upon existing reputation for high quality service.
  • Contribute to writing case studies, technical papers and potentially presenting at industry conferences/events.

Preferences: The successful candidate will have:

  • Degree or post-graduate qualification in Geophysics or Physics essential.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience conducting seismic data processing and/or seismic inversion project work essential.
  • Knowledge of fluid substitution, rock physics and log analysis, Velocity modelling and depth conversion not essential but advantageous.
  • Previous experience in leading, directing and/or mentoring a small team of geoscientists highly advantageous - the ability to do so is key
  • Experienced in using related software technologies such as Hampson and Russell STRATA and AVO highly advantageous.
  • Can work independently and the geophysical judgement necessary to make data analysis decisions essential.
  • Highly articulate in English language, the ability to translate technical instructions clearly to team members to deliver successful projects essential.
  • Excellent project management skills essential.
  • Motivated and enthusiastic with a positive attitude.
  • Can work independently and also be an excellent team player, with the ability to work with all levels within the Company to accomplish goals
  • Confidence to present technical project findings to clients, to mentor and support team members and to potentially present papers at industry events.
  • Highly flexible - ability to adapt to new project challenges and work practices.
  • Drive and ambition to succeed within a fast growing Company.
  • Must be service orientated.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.

Package: A salary of £60K-£75K per annum plus benefits package is on offer dependent on skills and experience. There may be some flexibility in salary for high calibre candidates.
