Job Overview:

A leading geoscience and engineering consulting company serving the global upstream oil and gas industry seeks a Technical Advisor to provide high level petrophysical advice, leadership and direction to their technical teams based in Europe and China, whilst maintaining strong working relationship and project management with their end client in the UK. Applicants are invited with a broad petrophysical background, the ability to liaise with exploration and development users and have strong project management skills. Managing the relationship with the end client whilst ensuring that the Company's technical teams are delivering petrophysical projects to the highest quality, is the key to this role.

The end client provides a range of standalone to integrated petroleum services across 27 countries. Their standalone services offer engineering, procurement and construction, operations and maintenance, but in recent years they have seen a major demand for their integrated service solutions. They have been highly successful with this integrated approach by delivering fast-track oil and gas developments or increasing production from late-life fields. They align their business goals with the asset holder through co-investment not by owning the reserves, hence reducing the risk for both parties whilst increasing the technical and commercial expertise to the project, and fundamentally increasing the return on the investment.

The Company has a strategic partnership with this FTSE 100 end client to provide geoscience and engineering professionals and services that supports this integrated service solution. The Company has teams of these professionals in China, Houston, and in Europe who undertake projects on behalf of the end client. On some occasions, the Company will provide additional resources to the augment the client's team. Their teams of professionals include: reservoir engineers, petroleum engineers, geophysicists, geologists, and petroleum economists.

The end client's projects are managed from their UK office. You will visit with them on a weekly basis (circa a half a day) to meet with the various project teams and to discuss requirements and progress of each project. You will liaise with the technical teams involved in Europe and China, ensuring they understand clearly the requirements, challenges, constraints, timelines and deliverables agreed. Acting as the liaison between these teams and the client's project group, you will clarify all queries, provide focus and direction to the work load, and quality control and quality assure all project deliverables. You will travel to Romania every 1-6 weeks for approximately 3 days to meet the European project team, to discuss and review current and future projects and to provide petrophysical expertise and guidance.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Chief Engineer you will be involved in the following Petrophysical activities:

  • Provide a wide range of petrophysical advice and guidance for:
    • Field development/re-development/reservoir modelling studies.
    • Single or multi-well petrophysical evaluations.
    • Petrophysical uncertainty
    • Well planning and drilling plans.
    • QC/QA of petrophysical formation evaluation data
    • Review and quality assure all petrophysical deliverables before presenting to client.
  • Work closely with the end client project teams - clarifying all requirements, ensuring deliverables are agreed, managing the relationship throughout the project.
  • Work closely with the Company's project teams in Europe and China - conveying clearly the requirements, timeframes, deliverables....
  • Manage the project deliverables ensuring they are delivered on time, in professional manner, and to a high technical level.
  • Present conclusions of projects to the end client.
  • Be proactive in promoting petrophysical workflows and advanced techniques to the project teams. Strive to raise their petrophysical awareness and practice.
  • Provide petrophysical input to field development, exploration and drilling plans.
  • Manage the working relationship with the end client for all petrophysical related tasks/projects.
  • Keep abreast of petrophysical work practices and trends in the industry and be active in sharing this knowledge.

The Company work in close partnership with their end clients to deliver innovative and disciplined processes, outsourced professionals and project deliverables, resulting in improved knowledge, skills and profit margins. This role is ideal for an individual with the required technical expertise, strong project management and client skills, and who wishes to work 2-3 days a week, working on exciting and challenging global projects.

Preferences: The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree in Petroleum Geology/Physics/Geosciences or Engineering essential. MSc/PhD desired.
  • A minimum of 15 years oil industry experience with a broad working background in petrophysics essential. Petrophysical experience across exploration and development is highly desired
  • Previous experience working for an oil operator desired.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in multi-disciplinary teams essential.
  • Experience of using industry petrophysical software essential. (e.g. Recall, Geolog, Techlog, IP, Petrel...)
  • Previous experience working on revitalising mature fields highly desired.
  • Excellent client liaison skills - the ability to engage with the client, gain trust and technical credibility is key.
  • Excellent project management skills - the ability to convey requirements accurately to the project teams and to manage deliverables to a high standard is key.
  • Ability to work at all levels to accomplish goals; has the ability to see the big picture and assertive to make bold recommendations desired.
  • Ability to plan and prioritise work programmes desired.
  • Excellent communication skills - the ability to devise and give presentations and technical reports in a coherent manner desired.
  • Ambitious - desire to succeed - to develop and grow with the role - become the focal petrophysical champion for this end client and potential others. To take on new challenges and to exceed expectations.
  • Willingness to travel.

Package: A Contract Day Rate of £900 - £1200 is on offer dependent on skills and experience. The contract will consist of an initial 3 month contract, followed by a minimum of 1 year contract by mutual consent.
