Job Overview:

A leading geoscience and engineering consulting company serving the global upstream oil and gas industry seeks a Chief Technical Advisor to define and implement technical standards, procedures and processes for all reservoir engineering work and oversee the technical excellence of the deliverables. In addition you will provide leadership, coaching and reservoir engineering direction to the technical teams based in Europe, Houston and China with regard to this discipline. This is a senior level position, and applicants are invited with a broad reservoir engineering background and the ability to drive technical excellence across multidisciplinary and cultural groups in different continents. Devising and implementing strategies to ensure the Company is performing reservoir engineering projects to the highest standard is key to this role.

Working with global oil operators to integrated service providers, they are fast becoming the strategic partner of choice for many players. Their teams of professionals reside in; Houston, Europe and China and include; reservoir engineers, petroleum engineers, geophysicists, geologists, and petroleum economists. They focus on developing the technical skills of these teams whilst fostering excellent team-working, communication and interpersonal skills.

The management team has a wealth of knowledge in understanding the challenges, constraints and needs of the upstream oil and gas industry and how to deliver high quality results. The Company has a strong focus on investment and development analysis for new assets as well as production improvement for existing assets. They work in close partnership with their clients to deliver innovative and disciplined processes and project professionals, resulting in improved knowledge, skills and profit margins.

You will become an integral member of the Senior Technical Team which will also consist of senior advisors from reservoir geomodelling and petrophysics. As required, you will travel to meet team members in other locations, to discuss and review current and future projects and to provide reservoir engineering expertise and guidance.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the CEO, you will be involved in the following Reservoir Engineering activities:

  • Provide leadership and technical direction to a wide range of reservoir engineering projects:
    • Reservoir modeling and well test analysis.
    • Production forecasting and reserves estimation.
    • Production optimisation.
    • Field development, exploration and drilling plans.
    • Reservoir planning, reporting and management.
    • Mature field management, infill drilling projects...
    • Integrating reservoir engineering results with other sub surface disciplines, commercial aspects and economics
  • Review reservoir engineering projects worldwide, and advise on priorities in terms of delivery, with a keen focus on ensuring quality throughout.
  • Assist regional manager in the evaluation of tenders for reservoir engineering services.
  • Establish and maintain consistent (reliable & predictable) service delivery - develop and promote service delivery methodologies, policies and good practices that become common place across all regions. Measure, monitor and manage Service Level Agreements (SLA).
  • Work closely with your reservoir engineering teams globally, guiding and assisting them to raise the standards and reputation of the service offerings.
  • Improve expertise - ensure all reservoir engineers have the correct skills for current and future projects. Manage skill shortages and hire or develop resources as needed. Drive career development programs to reinforce technical competencies. Devise strong mentoring and coaching strategies. Overall, strive to ensure an integrated tightly bound team of reservoir engineering resource that is utilised on a continuous basis.
  • Keep abreast of reservoir engineering practices, trends and technologies in the industry. Make recommendation and manage the implementation of new ways of working.
  • Attend meetings with clients and partners - understand their business model, challenges and constraints in terms of reservoir engineering projects. Be proactive in planning ahead to meet their needs.
  • Establish good working relationships with these clients and partners - become the "guru" within reservoir engineering, advising and directing them in the optimum manner in which to undertake projects.
  • Be proactive in improving your understanding of reservoir engineering input to field development, exploration and drilling plans

Preferences: The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree in a geoscience related or Engineering subject essential. MSc/PhD in Petroleum Engineering highly desired.
  • A minimum of 15 years oil industry experience with a broad working background in reservoir engineering essential. Experience across exploration and development is highly desired
  • Previous experience in leading, supervising or managing consulting services across regions/cultures highly advantageous.
  • A strong focus on defining and implementing standards that delivers client satisfaction to the highest level.
  • An assertive individual with the ability to provide effective leadership in conflicting and demanding situations in a dynamic environment.
  • Entrepreneurial individual - ability to identify new work practices, trends, technologies, technical play concepts in exploration/production, and how the Company's strengths can be leveraged to react and lead delivering success.
  • Familiarity of industry reservoir engineering software essential (e.g. Eclipse, VIP, Saphire, Petrel RE, OFM, MBAL...).
  • Previous experience working on revitalising mature fields highly desired.
  • Personality and confidence to build strong relationships across different cultures and establish technical credibility and trust is paramount to this role.
  • Excellent English communications skills - you will liaise with senior level management and technical personnel and participate at senior level meetings with clients and partners.
  • Willingness to travel.

Package: This is an ex-pat contract and an attractive package will be devised dependent on skills and experience.
