Job Overview: One of Europe's largest independent oil and gas exploration and production companies is seeking a Lead Geophysicist to undertake the investigative work in preparing QI and rock physics outputs. Working on a range of projects from many different assets across the Company, ranging from detailed field development studies to frontier exploration in AVO, rock physics analysis, and seismic inversion, you will provide geophysical expertise and lead further technological advancements in quantitative inversion. The Company has a large portfolio of exploration and production assets with over 150 licences across 26 countries, and are producing from over 60 fields. They are expanding rapidly year-on-year and have in excess of 1700 people worldwide. Their exploration-led growth strategy is focused on light oil in Africa and the Atlantic Margins. Based in the Geophysical Technology Group in Dublin, you will work on a wide variety of projects across the Company's assets with a range of objectives to include: seismic data conditioning, fluid and lithology modeling and prediction; block evaluation, 4D, VSP etc. The team delivers the latest innovations in quantitative inversion and rock physics enabled inversion software and services with a fresh and flexible scientific approach to create subsurface value.

Establishing yourself as the expert in Quantitative Inversion, you will investigate new geophysical techniques and technologies that could add value to workflows. You will drive and influence the adaptation of these technologies and methodologies across the Company Group.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Geophysical Technology Manager this role encompasses many functions including:

  • Become competent in the Company's suite of software solutions utilised, work flows, and practices.
  • Provide quantitative inversion input on project work from across the company assets.
  • Address seismic amplitude anomalies, the data behind the anomalies and their impact on prospect assessment.
  • Work closely with the wider geoscience and engineering team; understanding their needs, tailoring studies to match them and using seismic technologies in conjunction with rock physics studies to assist in the identification, analysis and de-risking of hydrocarbon accumulations.
  • Provide mentoring and training to more junior scientists. Visit students and interns from the Company's global operations.
  • Rock Physics involvement:
    • QC of wireline data
    • Evaluate optimum Rock Physics Model
    • Depth trend analysis
    • Rock Physics Templates and databases
    • Fluid substitution and scenario modelling
      • Gas, Fizz gas, Oil, Brine, Cementation and Pressure
    • Seismic forward models, upscaling
  • Seismic QC, AVO and Seismic Trace Inversion Involvement:
      • Quality Assured Inputs
      • Input as gathers or angle stacks
      • Check seismic volumes using amplitude maps
      • Estimate AVO noise
    • Data Enhancement
      • De-noise and demultiple
      • Alignment in gathers
    • Well-Seismic ties and wavelet estimation
    • Coloured Inversion
    • EEI Chi volumes for Lithology and Fluids
      • Generate optimum angles for lithology, facies and fluids
    • Other Inversion methodologies
      • Simultaneous
      • Stochastic
      • JIFI
    • Other seismic analysis methods: seismic attributes, spectral decomposition and advanced visualisation techniques
    • Quality Control
    • Uncertainty analysis
    • Reporting
  • Development Involvement:
      • Work with Ikon Science on the development of the JIFI software.
      • Investigate alternatives available and develop new methodologies.

Requirements: The successful candidate will have:

  • Degree level education essential. Preferably in Geophysics, Maths, Engineering or Physics. Masters or PHD preferred.
  • A minimum of 12 years Oil & Gas industry experience essential.
  • Experience in a wide range of geophysical techniques with a strong background in signal processing, rock physics and seismic trace inversion essential. Experience of other seismic and non-seismic methods desired.
  • Proven experience working as a research geophysicist and on projects either with an operator, consultancy or service company essential.
  • Can apply research and knowledge to identify anomalies and run scenario tests to produce an optimised workflow essential.
  • Can work in close association with the Interpretation Team and other reservoir members to find the best workflow for a particular asset.
  • Proven hands-on technical expertise in rock physics and inversion software essential. Experience of RokDoc, Prestack Pro or Petrel desired.
  • Excellent presentation skills essential. Presentations to partners, asset representatives, executive committees and other stakeholders will be routinely required.
  • Previous experience in leading, directing and/or mentoring a small team of scientists, with the ability to train other team members and provide mentoring and coaching of junior team members within the company as well as visiting students and interns from the Company's global operations.
