Job Overview: A Global Leader in the fast growing seabed acquisition market seeks an Instrumentation Department Manager to manage the department and ensure that technical support is provided for all instrumentation aspects of the global acquisition operations conducted by the Company. The Company's main business units include Transition Zone and Shallow Water, Intermediate Depth and Deepwater, Permanent reservoir solutions and Electromagnetic and Magneto-Telluric. They offer a unique combination of decades of subsea and seismic experience and have the critical mass to provide services to global clients, together with an unsurpassed ability to acquire data in depths of between 1.5m and abyssal depths down to over 3,000m. They also offer associated services such as processing, analysis and interpretation.

This role has two direct reports - Instrumentation Managers for Node and OBC Instruments. The Instrumentation Department consists of 50 - 60 personnel, the majority of which are in the field. As Department Manager you will make frequent trips to the field to oversee operations, visit with suppliers, review new technologies, and attend industry conferences and events.

The role encompasses the management of a wide variety of technics such as autonomous nodes recordings devices, ocean bottom seismic cables, recorder systems (such as SERCEL 408, 428), gun controllers, etc. All types of seabed operations are covered (Shallow Water, Ocean Bottom Cable, Ocean Bottom Nodes).

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Technical Support Manager within the Operational Excellence group this role encompasses many functions including:

  • Manage all aspects of the Instrumentation Department. Manage the department through the various locations, ensuring operations run smoothly and effectively.
  • Be the key technical focal point for instrumentation matters.
  • Ensure that efficient technical support is provided to all operations, making sure that homogeneous systems are in place (DT logging, reporting, etc.), and best practices are shared with relevant personnel across the Company.
  • Provide technical support to Operations by making sure that acquisition is continuous without major technical Down Time.
  • Ensure technical assistance to operations is always provided (remotely & onsite), during rigging/derigging phases or while in production
  • Define and implement the Company Instrumentation processes, documentations, standards. Be proactive in ensuring that these are understood and adopted across the Company.
  • Participate in technical stops, rigging/derigging if required.
  • Conduct technical audits as required.
  • Work closely with the R&D department in relation to instrument developments - e.g. new market for ocean bottom nodes.
  • Assist the Sourcing Department in response to supplier evaluation.
  • Assist the Commercial Engineering department in providing technical responses to bid offers.
  • Participate in the recruitment process as required. Ensure that all procedures, technical notes and technical guides are available and kept up to date.
  • Attend industry technical conferences, exhibitions and seminars.
  • Keep abreast of instrumentation developments in the market - trends, work practices...

Dependent on your preference this role can be based in Norway (Bergen/Trondheim) or France (Southern suburbs of Paris). The role offers a great deal of autonomy and scope to manage and drive advancements within the Instrumentation Department. The Company is expanding so there is potential for career progression.

Preferences: The successful candidate will have:

  • An academic background in electronics, geophysics, or earth science discipline essential. A degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years work experience, some of which in a Technical Management role essential.
  • Knowledge of the instruments used in seismic data acquisition essential.
  • A strong understanding of the standards and requirements for data acquisition within the Oil and Gas industry essential.
  • Experience of the marine seismic industry highly desired (e.g. Observer Marine towed streamer or Seabed) but all industry data acquisition sectors considered (i.e. airborne, marine or/and land).
  • Strong team player but also can work independently - can prioritise and manage instrumentation objectives across concurrent acquisition operations.
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English - the ability to communicate and collaborate across various departments internally and with service providers externally.
  • Dependent on location, a second European Language desired (e.g. Norwegian or French).
  • Willingness to travel - circa 10 days per month.

Package: A Base Salary of €65K - €85K plus bonus and field allowance (i.e. €110pd) delivering a remuneration package of €90K - €110K plus attractive benefit package is on offer dependent on skills and experience. There may be some flexibility on base salary for a high calibre candidate.
